1911 build

I think a 1911 build party would have a lot of support. Just no one has really tackled it so it hasn't gotten done. I know I would definitely be willing to go. All that's needed to host the build party is the standard equipment, a mill, and the 1911 jigs and one of them is sold on KTO. I'd pitch in to buy that if it was for the build party.Comment

I've done one and I'll say the slide rails were the easiest part.
The under cut tools are needed for the magazine release retainer, the disconnector and sometimes the thumb safety depending on which frame you get.
I built mine up with all Ed Brown internals, a Caspian slide and a Schuemann barrel. I've yet to put a round thru her but she feels great and seems to work a treat. We'll see how it goes at the range hopefully soon.Last edited by couch; 12-27-2010, 2:17 PM.Comment

Well, then lets keep this thread alive and talk about where we could do a build party. I'm in Norcal, but have no access to milling equipment or experienced. I'm in the SF Bay area.sigpic

I'm looking into building 1911s also. It seems that there are potential legal issues with completing an 80% pistol frame as it is illegal for an unlicensed individual to manufacturer handguns. Does anybody know the details on this?-- Proud Donor. Please join me in donating now to help protect our 2nd amendment rights.

OK, that conflicts with something else I read online but evidently I didn't bookmark it. Thanks for the info. It's a home build. its legal. I am in San Jose and have access to a full machine shop. I am willing to host for a SMALL number of people.Well, then lets keep this thread alive and talk about where we could do a build party. I'm in Norcal, but have no access to milling equipment or experienced. I'm in the SF Bay area.
Here's the problem, I know next to nothing about 1911's other than that I want one. We would need someone who knows what they are doing. Preferably someone who has completed a frame before. I am not incompetent when it comes to machining, I just don't want to waste anyone's time (or scrap their part) while trying to figure out setups.
I have the cad files from cncguns and they do not include that feature inside the mag release. Does anyone have a more comprehensive solid model? Cncguns has the blueprint also so I guess I'll have to study it a little better....I've done one and I'll say the slide rails were the easiest part.

To do a proper job you will need several special tools, like frame rail and barrel lug grinders, Everything is available from Brownells. It is not inexpensive but if you are doing several it might be worth it. Get a Kunhausen book (and read it) before you do anythingComment

The print on cncguns is missing the Disconnecter location. There was something else, but can't remember. I'll check it out when I get home.
I don't have any "proper" 1911 tools but have a machine shop, in Orange. Most of the tools needed I made myself. Luckily the frame I got had a few of the holes finished already.
I needed to counterbore the mag release, mill the slide rails, barrel bed, disconnecter hole and backbore (biggest Pits of the project), mainspring housing slot and ways, sear spring alot, top of frame as it was way oversize, open up the trigger area and sear area for slight clearance, cut the dust cover to length, tap the grip screw bushing holes (only tool I purchased for the project), drill the ejector holes, drill the plunger tube holes, blend everything and fit.
I still need sights.

I am not understand what your first question is. What do you mean which features must be omitted?
Also from what I have read, you want to mill things slightly oversized so you can fit to finish once you get your partsComment

You can copy what KTO has done with their 1911s but the couple of people I talk with about the 1911 unfinished frames they make, they do less than KTO to stay 100% on the legal side.
For example I have seen 1911 unfinished frames with everything done but finishing the holes, small holes were drilled already and to the mainspring housing. That is a lot of work done already.Last edited by _Z_; 12-28-2010, 4:17 PM.Comment
