Got 3 things goin on with AK type stuff.

With bullet buttons and all that hip stuff it makes me wonder why they dont make push button mag releases for AKs in free states. Im working on an AK BB for fun and probably over engineering the thing to death but came up with some silly ideas where the mag pops out on its own and drops free with either a use of a tool or a push button. (ie. only need one hand to manipualate easily)

I've come to hate the current BB designs after having made my own solar tactical style BB and looking at how the larger style ones work. Just the idea of having that big hunk of metal next to the trigger guard annoys me when it only serves one purpose.

I guess the big question is, can it be pulled off stylishly? Seems like people care more about how their gun looks over its functionality.

Also from an engineering stand point, it makes a lot more sense to have a solid anchor (drilling a hole into the trigger guard)

Other 2 things; doing a jig and quick detach pistol grip w/sling attachment. Should I post pics? I only got shody looking prototypes

Basically the prototype in the pics is ambidextrous, uses leverage, pre engages the lever approx 85%, only 2 screws, VERY secure, slim.

My design is very functional, obviously I didnt take the time to smooth out the corners, I was using a manual mill so that would have taken forever. Imagine it with some nice contours around the edges instead of that blocky looking thing in the pics. Its more of a prototype that proves its great functionality over current ak BBs.

Your thoughts?

ps I ditched the version that kicks the mag free, too many variance in magazines. Some too tight, some too loose, also it looked fugly.

When I was at PRK in Fresno a few weeks ago they had managed to rig up a BB FN-FAL, plus it was chambered in .223 and took AR magazines! Incredibly light for a FAL.

I had the same idea....send me the pics...I think its the same exact idea you have...but I want to make sure......I won't steal your idea!!!!




Ok, ok...nah really though, get at least some type of patent on it before you start posting pics of it. Paranoid is not the word....good business is what your looking for. If you have an idea...guard it with your life!!

If you design a push button mag release for the AK (for free states), make it something that can be operated with the trigger finger so the other hand is free to grab a magazine.

Yeah that's exactly what I did it for.

For an update, a few days ago I made and tested my 2nd version which proves the concept works but it is so fugly and not layed out so great and I dont want to post pictures of it

But hey, prototype 3 shall be made this week at the shop, should be a good one.

My bro will be doing some solidworks too so...yeah.

It would also be nice to have the charging handle on the left side so a right handed shooter could operate it without letting go of the pistol grip, or at least have a bolt hold open feature. Most of this would violate the Soviet doctorine of simplicity I suppose..

Anyway, when you get a workable design going, get a patent on it and post it up.

Don't mean to make this into a thread about patents, but the so-called "poor man's patent" unfortunately doesn't give you any rights - it doesn't even give you the right to say "patent pending." Since you posted the pictures online (publication), at best it might constitute prior art to anyone else that would attempt to patent the same concept, but you wouldn't be receiving the main benefit of a patent, which is to exclude others from making, using, selling, or importing the covered device.

The quickest way to get a legitimate "patent pending" status by filing a provisional application with all the disclosure materials that you currently have and by paying the USPTO $110 filing fee. But even this doesn't get you patent rights, since the provisional application will expire in exactly one year from filing. A non-provisional application with all the necessary parts (claims, detailed description, etc.) must be filed before that time. After that, the application goes through a review process that can take several years.

Yes thank you, I know quite a bit about patents.

All that is really required is proof of time the unique design was made/published and 1 year from then is allowed for a provisional patent.

1 year is plenty of time for something like this, technically if a big company liked it, they could buy the rights to use the design (or try to steal it) but since I have proof then it makes their job a bit hard.
