How crazy do you plan on getting with the conversion? I have a done a 5.45 from front to back, but it was a PITA!

You could go with the Krebs safety, it holds the bcg open. I just did the conversion on my 7.62 and now have both. I would have left out the bho now that I look back at it.

i was thinking the bolt hold open would be more convenient for the range when they clear the line

You can lock the bcg open with the Krebs safety, have it on safe and you can visually see the bcg is open.

With what they charge you could notch your selector to do the samething.

or notch another selector if you want to keep your original parts.

If you just want to do a simple pistol grip conversion, you just need a hammer, dremel or a file if u want to work that hard, and drill.

Seems like the hardest part about it is installing the FSB and brake. I'm debating whether to try that part on my own or just let a gunsmith do it. How much does that run?

For a true conversion the crappy part will be getting the parts, they are expensive and will need to be special ordered.

Why? Bulgy FSB's can be found for under 50 bucks if you look around last I saw. Furniture is cheap and plentiful, as are -74 style muzzle brake's. Hell even repro 74 brakes are less than 50 bucks.

I like the safety, you don't have to take your hand off the grip to work it, eh.

Who uses the safety on their AK?
