I wanted to make sure prior to skill test I had enough slugs in case of gun issues. Plan was to buy two five round boxes of slugs as back up. Plan nixed as ammo bunker wanted $3.50 per slug. Sounds like bird shot is still reasonable, slugs are not so much. 10/14 n 10/15

Practical Rifle and Wolf/Tula Steel Case OK?

      Hi,
Have a class coming up in Nov. Does FS allow use of Wolf/Tula steel cased ammo? Some in my group will be doing the 4DDHG and hoping to bring cheaper 9mm Wolf. Im planning on shooting my AK and using Wolf steel case.

      Thanks

No. They do the magnet check...

On the topic of optic, what I ran last time and was happy with it was a 510C-GR with a Sig Juliet 4 magnifier. I really like the huge field of view on the 510 and eye relief compared to a LPVO, for me it's very fast to acquire my sight picture. Then for the long shots it's really fast to flip the magnifier. In the afternoon fun portion of the last day of class we were doing some longer shots at 150 and 200 and I was having no problems consistently hitting the steel.

Have a blast out there, it's a great class and lots of fun!
              Thanks for the suggestions!

I believe you. And I do not understand how "steel cases" are not magnetic...

The cases are but the bullets are not.

Most of the steel cased 7.62 x 39 is also steel jacketed, copper jacketed is rare for the eastern block ammo.
I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong...

They check the projectile itself, not the case. Most Russian made ammo have a bi-metal jacket on the bullet itself that makes it magnetic. I believe the Wolf non magnetic ammo I showed above was specially made for the US market.

I have taken FS classes with steel cased Hornady ammo and passed weapons inspection with no problems.

I just remembered I have a set of these elbow and knee pads left over from my mountain biking and snowboarding days. Low profile under a pair of pants and the elbow pads are also easy on/off.

Also have several pair of 5.11 pants that I wear for work that have built-in pockets for knee pads and have a set of these from LA Police Gear that I bought for a shotgun class I was going to take last year but those plans fell through.

Don't mean to shift the discussion, but I'm headed to FS on October 11 and 12 for the 2 Day DHG class. My favorite class is the HG Skillbuilder but with covid, my 2 year requirement lapsed so I have to go back to the beginning of the line.

My go to handgun is a Glock 22. I've had an extended mag release and slide stop installed and they are great.

If you want a real challenge, take the class utilizing support hand instead of strong hand. I did it once and it's easier than you think.

Guy did exactly that in the 4DDHG I was in a few weeks ago. Shot left handed and received a Graduate certificate. After chatting with I'm a bit I learned guy was also a professional firearms instructor.

If you really want some insight talk to some of the left handed instructors in how they run their right handed gun. Simple but very enlightening. Passed these tips onto some wrong handed shooters and it was very helpful as they had issues with right hand control only guns.

The kneepad inserts are great for everyday / light-duty usage, but I wouldn't use them for most training class especially with repetitive up/down exercises. The gravel will start chewing up the pants cloth. Probably fine for a couple days, but can end up being a more expensive training class. That said, I don't know what repetitions are done in the class you're taking, so it could be a moot point.

Shooting support side will also enlighten you on how to store your gear on your body if your firing hand goes down. I've had friends with slick knife and flashlight carry setups that did not work well for them if they had to use their support hand only.
