i understand, thank...i thought it might be a requirement of the class to promote tactical reloads i.e. not allowing the slide to lock back on an empty magazine

What I love are the guys that come into the class letting everyone know they are from California and all the cool things they have to compensate for the laws. Kind of like folks that are vegan or into cross fit. They let you know in the first 5 minutes😁.
Being from California I figured out a long time ago just to keep my mouth shut about it.Comment

I've been going to Front Sight since about '96 when it was still in California. I started going to the 'Vegas' facility right after the 'comfort station' was finished - ?mid 2012?. That's quite a few years between the two.
I think the only way someone would identify me as from California would be my license plates.Comment

Just completed my first FS course - 4-day Practical Rifle.
As a brand new shooter (I had only previously shot about 100 casual rounds through an AR, and not one through my new rifle) it was very useful.
Morning session of Day 3, we had about as bad weather conditions as you could imagine in Pahrump; cold, steady rain, and windy I will admit that I didn’t enjoy myself at all that day, and I’d say for new shooters especially under those conditions there are diminishing if any returns. I would prefer it if there were some classroom (or at least under the shelter) instruction they could fall back on when things get really bad. Drainage n the shelter at the rifle range was also very bad, with as much as two inches of standing water, preventing keeping any supplies or bags on the ground.
I was generally happy with the instruction, though with a full class of over 40 students many of whom were repeaters, there was certainly a lack of individual attention. In particular, I found the instruction of the malfunction clearing and reloads to be conducted too quickly. I knew I was having trouble, and on more than one occasion has to wave both hands in the air to get questions asked or instruction given.
In the end, I lost TWENTY-ONE points on the procedurals in the skills test, because I clearly had not mastered these skills. Of course, I will now work on them on my own but I would have like to have spent more time on these. Especially since nearly half of the afternoon of Day 4 was spent sitting around killing time between exercises so the instructors could say they kept us until 5pm. That is to say, we had more time, and it could’ve been used more efficiently.
I did end up graduating, since I only lost 14 points on the shooting section of the test. Of course, besides the different piece of paper, it doesn’t appear there is any different between a Certificate of Attendance and Graduate. Correct me if I’m wrong, but only a DG allows one to move on to the more advanced rifle classes. I don’t think I’d want to spend another 4 days going through this class just for the small chance of a DG (there was only 1 in our class). Your mileage may vary, I understand.
In any event, overall a mostly positive experience, and I am likely to return for the 2 or 4-day shotgun course.

Make sure you fill out the evaluation form that gets emailed to you with this info. I've had to reframe my view of the intro classes as my own general handling skills have improved. I did feel that we could have used more time with malfunctions in the Practical Rifle course, and mentioned that in the eval. We had 61 people in my class, with the same ~4 instructors. That's a lot, and the people that are really fumbling around with things need attention as a point of safety. My expectations were set from my own imagination, now that I've seen the other people in the course I understand sort of where I lie in the grand scheme of things and have reset what I expect. It's definitely an intro course and unless you speak up they might not catch that you need help. Not "ideal" but that's why I'm paying $800-1000+ for a small size precision class at a specialty school
Great news about the Marksmanship Skill Builder opening up!Last edited by million_ants; 03-08-2019, 10:24 AM.Comment

Dang! Good question...
I would believe NOT, right?
But then based on those who have private training privileges; it would seem possible...
If not through the curriculum; but at least something "similar" to it... Hhhmmm...

Not sure about the private training question, but it looks like a DG in Marksmanship is necessary (along with Precision Rifle Fundamentals) to take Precision Rifle:

If a Marksmanship Skill Builder is going to be offered (which makes sense and is consistent with all other FS tracks to more advanced courses), then I'm guessing a DG in the SB will also meet the Precision Rifle pre-req.Comment

correct.
Know that the RM running your private training class has a printout of your FS attendance / grades so they'll know what you're prepared for and which pre-requisites you've met.
Only a Graduate is required to take Tactical HG so that'll be easy to do in Private for most.
Adv Tactical does require a DG and really, that would be a difficult class to do as a private just because of the exercises done and equipment needed to do the full class. (wilson wall, empty vehicles, dummies, shoot house trips, etc) I guess you could do it but I like the squad format they use for that course.Last edited by Jedi54; 03-08-2019, 9:32 PM.Comment

That said, so far, I am set for the 5/29 - 6/1 class. Hoping nothing at work or something else changes that... Or I will need to wait until 9/4...
Thanks,

Speaking of THG and ATHG - I would remember reading that one-handed manipulations are part of the curriculum. This would mean that a sturdy rear sight that allows for it will be needed? No adjustable rears or sights that are angled back (to reduce glare), correct?
