    Best First Competition?

    Two questions:

1:Assuming you aren't a GSSF member, or shoot something other then a Glock, what is the best competition to aim for as your first? (Assume someone who will show up with a pistol, a few mags, a holster, and a sandwich). (I only mention GSSF because their contests seem geared towards being newbie friendly)

2: what minimum skill should you try for at the range before entering the contest? (for example, GSSF requires hitting targets at 75', so I'd practice that a few times before entering)

I've written up my ongoing adventures as I learn to hunt.

Yes, you CAN fit a case of shotgun shells into a .50cal ammo can.

I think i found an optimal solution for ammo can labeling.

I made this target for the NRA's Marksman pistol test. I think it's a lot better than the paper plate they suggest.

I've always thought that steel challenge is a good one to start with for handguns. There are quite a few categories depending on what kind of gun and sights you have. You aren't running and reloading, shooting around barriers, or around low barrels, etc. I think there is one stage that you move from one box to another. The target sequence is up to you except that the stop plate must be shot last. Also, since they have a small number of stages that they rotate through from match to match, you can really measure your improvement. Now to get very good it's a lot of work, but I think it's a good place to start.

          A little about the match...

This is a great tactical match to get your start on currently we have three classes Mens,Womens and Youth. We shoot 18 rounds per scenario and where most tactical matches want you to engage every target until its hit, our emphasis is on accuracy so if you miss the target you move onto the next target. The paper and steel targets are anywhere from 5yard to 15yards out from the firingline and we try to keep it interesting and challenging for our shooters... Usually we shoot between 3-4 scenario's and finish with Walk and Draw around 1-2pm.

          Walk and Draw:
Walk in draw consists of Two shooters one on the left on on the Right that engage to knockdown targets then a flag tree the opponent that knocks on the flags onto there opponents side wins and advances to the next bracket to take on the next challenger till there are none...

We have a great group folks some come on out and join us...
Boy the way Glen Miller played, songs that made the hit parade, guys like us we had it made, those were the days, and you know where you were then, girls were girls and men were men, mister we could use a man like Herbert Hoover again, didn't need no welfare states everybody pulled his weight, gee our old Lasalle ran great, those were the days!

Without question, GSSF is the best place for new guys to start in competition with limited equipment and necessary skills/coordination.

Next would definitely be steel challenge shooting as there is only 1 stage that requires movement and if using a 22, you don't need a holster. Check out matches at Southwest Pistol League for a good place to start that's not too far from where you are.

I did USPSA as my first (and only so far). Most clubs offer first-timer seminars. They will walk you through the rules of the game, especially the safety part. I dont think there is a minimum skill requirement, the most important is SAFETY. (cant stress that enough).
You dont have to be a member to attend one, most clubs require you to attend the seminar (if you are a beginner and never shot one). You'll have fun.

My advice is to "just do it". Don't wait man, there is no time like the present. The best way to improve is to get to the matches!

Oh Yea! The walk & Draw is a blast. Even the most experienced shooters have problems with it. We have had some very good USPSA shooters fall apart on this stage. It is a lot different when you are shooting against another shooter at the same time! We make sure the playing field is level with 6 rounds in a mag and only 3 mags allowed.
