    "Gaming" instructions

There are plenty of defensive/tactical type shooting instruction. Why aren't there any classes available for USPSA type shooting? The only suggestion I've seen for 3 gun, or any other type of run and gun shooting, has been "show up and give it a try". A little bit of instruction would be nice, so I know what to expect.

Um, there is a new shooter orientation at Richmond specifically for competition.. ie uspsa.

Otherwise there are occasional classes held by USPSA GM's like Matt Burkett for improving your game. There was a mid-level class put on last year for B-D shooters to improve their game to get them to a higher classification.

Dunno about any NorCal classes but if you want to come south, there's the upcoming Bruce Gray class in San Diego. Additionally, we have a few GMs teaching classes including Jimmy Flores with Rhino Tactical and of course, Taran Butler.

Yeah! I've been shooting USPSA pistol for a couple of years, so that level of class would fit my needs, please let me know when the next one is scheduled.

I was hoping for a beginner/orientation class for 3 gun. Anything like that?

I think its demand. People want to shoot AR's for many reasons but not nesscarily competition. In my opinion people bascially just want to be familar with their rifles and learn trigger control and sight picture. I suppose this is why there are so many carbine 1 classes.

A lot of the same skills carry over from a carbine 1/2 class to 3 gun.

OP, there aren't a lot of 3-gun specific training opportunities out there so I know of only 2:

              1. The guys at Tigerswan shoot competition and have a 3-day pistol/rifle class that touches upon this. From their website:

"Our 3 day Pistol and Carbine course is designed to teach the weapons handling skills needed in a tactical environment. Its also a great introduction to the rifle and pistol skills required for 3 gun competition."

              2. USSA, out of Tulsa,OK, teaches a 4-day 3-gun competition class from Erik Lund. In my discussions with them, they'd be willing to do a mobile class here in CA, given enough interest.

              Hope this helps.

I think the best way you can learn to do the 3 gunning thing is to watch the best ppl in your area and ask questions why they do things the way they do. We have some of those shooters at RRGC and they are easy to approach and talk to.

I just started "gaming" I'd be interested in any classes offered.

Does Keith Garcia teach a 3-gun class? From the SMM3G video, it looks like he's training for Practical Shooting Academy and it doesn't show a 3-gun class on there.

Whenever I shoot a match at Richmond, the shooters there are always helpful and friendly. However, I don't want to "bother" them with a ton of questions about 3 gun while they are shooting a pistol match. Would it be possible to get one of your Grand Masters to give an orientation/beginning class? It would depend on interest, but I would think it would get more shooters to your club.

There is going to be the Memorial Day 3 gun match at Sac Valley.
NCPS is putting it on, USPSA rules. Good match to come out and watch and ask questions of the shooters, we are always glad to help new shooters. It is always fun to get a shooter hooked on 3 gun. I always try to shoot with the guys who are there to have fun.
If you can shoot a NCPS 3 gun match, you can shoot the Nationals. We had 10 shooters from the club go to Vegas for the 3 Gun Nationals,
and a large group from Richmond went also. All of us are going back in September for the 2010 Nationals.
Stage design and rifle distances are excellent to get the feel of a major match. They usually have a stage where you shoot out to 350 yds.

Um, that's up to them and their time.. we don't really have a "LOT" of GM's. One or two in Open that are from other clubs, one in Limited that is LEO that I haven't seen in months, one in Production that isn't really a 3-gun shooter, and one in Revolver that is into 3-gun, but likely not interested in giving a class. As for shooters.. we have a lot of those.. at least for the pistol matches.. and the BARC will likely sell out. Out of the 50 or so matches we hold a year, we have a load of participation.. so I don't know how many more ppl we can accomodate

We have several Master level shooters that are 3-gunners, but not a lot of them have the time and likely not the want to give an instruction class. Bennie Cooley was here years ago giving a 3-gun class. Michael Voight gave a class some years back as did Jerry Miculek (for revolvers). There was a mid level class last year for pistol, but we haven't had anything lately..

"Should" is a matter of someone wanting to hold the class and line up someone who likely has a very busy schedule, not to mention finding the time when they can reserve a shooting bay on our club which has a very busy schedule on it's own. You could always ask one of the competitors if they would hold private instruction for you or suggest someone that does that kind of thing.

I wish we could be more help, but the guys I know just have a load of trigger time and experience and they got that from going to matches and doing a load of dry and live fire.. That is really the only way to get better is trigger time, and analyzing what you do (via video) to see how you can get better. I SHOULD dry fire every day but I'm lazy.. I also don't expect to win..

Also, actual formal instruction also starts bringing up liability & insurance concerns that folks might not wish to deal with if that's not a line of business for them...
