Hornady lnl ap users * NEW QUESTION *

7I am thinking of moving up to a progressive for my 9mm and 45acp. Right now i use a lee classic turret press and a lee hard cast ss for my 223.

I dont have a great need for it besides 1 pull to 4 pulls for a finished bullet.

Few questions is there anyway way to get a hold of the case feeding parts to add a self filled tube only?

I called hornady and they said they dont sell parts just then entire case feeder.

I was hoping one of the online stores that dont charge taxes would put it onsale again near the $350-$370 ive seen in the past. That plus the free bullets would be enough for me to pull the trigger.

Also im trying to figure out prices i have dies, i know i need shell plates. I was told the hopper comes with the pistol insert but im not sure.

Can you think of any other upfront cost.

Lastly anyone local wanna let me watch them use there machine and give the slot machine a few pulls?long beach - gardena area. Willing to drive to oc to try before i buy.

    Thanks all

I don't have a case feeder for my LnL and I do fine. My opinion, of you want a case fed progressive, go with the 650.

Option 2 Is to make your own case feeder. There are a bunch of ingenious creations on youtube. Cheap too.

It comes with both large and small powder drums.

You can make your down bullet feeder, by watching youtube like bumslie said.

I don't have a case feeder either, but I do have Inline Fabrication stuff, such as the strong mount, roller handle, and accessory tray arm. The tray arm is perfect reach/height for my empty cases to just put on the press manually, it's pretty fast.

The only "slow" part for me is the bullets. I have a bullet feeding die, but not bullet feeder I plan to add one later on though. For now I just put 9 bullets in the die and just crank until all the bullets are gone, then reload them again.

It is only $310 at Amazon

Oops, I just realized that you were referring to the press, the above link is to the case feeder.

The powder measure does come with both pistol and rifle inserts. Shell plates are $26

I did fine without the case feeder, but broke down and bought one anyway.
It sucks for 300 Blackout, but for auto pistol cases, it is great.

If you get one, do what I keep forgetting to do.
Make a chart that lists calibers and case feeder part #s required, then label the parts so you can set it up faster.

Thanks for the replies so far guys. Im left handed so my reason for wanting the case drop is so i can keep my right hand on the handle. And only use my left to place a bullet instead of bullet and case.
Doubt it will kill me though ill watch some more youtube for tricks to make my own case drop because $310 i just cant do ontop of the press cost.

I appreciate everyone's thoughts and input. I did look at dillon 550b but didnt like having to turn the plat manually and didnt like having to take your right hand off the handle to seat a case then left hand to place a bullet.

My goal/prayer is $350-$370 no taxes free shipping for the press. And 500 free bullets to make me feel better about the splurg. Luckily i can do fine with what i have so there no rudh. Maybe there will be some holiday sales.

Dillion would be over $500 min. So im going to try the lnl ap out. (I have no brand loyalty)

Midway has some shell plates and other parts on sale right now, I stocked up on some springs and a few other things just cause the price was great and I won't be dead in the water when one gives up.

There are a couple L n L's in the market place, one has a case feeder and is priced pretty decent.... I was thinking of getting it so I could have one set for small primer and one for large.

I'm a lefty and do just fine keeping up with shell and bullet. I'm not trying to break speed records though. If I recall correctly, bullet is placed on the beginning of the downstroke and the shell is placed after the shell plate indexes. Why? I'm waiting for the shell plate to turn enough to eject the last finished case.

Chknlpys2 - thanks for the heads up. Damn them for not putting the 45acp shell holder for $22.00 might buy the 9mm though.

I used a friends Dillon 650 without a case collator. It has a bullet feeder that shoves the case into the shell plate. This meant we were either feeding individual cases into the case "feeder" on the RIGHT side of the press or we had to stand every 20-25 cases to refill a plastic tube. I told my friend to get the case collator ASAP.
With my Hornady presses, I have never felt a need for a case feeder or collator. You pick up a case and bullet in your LEFT hand and slide the case in the shell holder, put the bullet on the charged case (after looking almost straight down to inspect the powder charge in the case), and pull the handle. Not inserting a case by hand saves so very little time, since you still have the time you still spend to fill a plastic tube with cases, that I don't see any advantage and you are simply complicating things that don't need to be complicated.
Get the press and use it for awhile and then decide exactly what you really feel you need.
The #1 shell plate will work for .45, but it also can cause jams when the press tries to eject the case. Again, the time it takes to flick the case off the shell plate with the left hand is really almost zero.

Noylj thanks for the great advise. Ill focus on learning some times/tricks from youtube and wait to see if the press goes on sale a little bit more since i dont have a need to rush. I see midsouth has jt for $399 now. Psa seems out of stock along with grafs. Cabales is over $400 along with ebay and tax charging amazon.

Anyone know any other retails to check?

I just upgraded from a LCT to a progressive two weeks ago. Like you I got tired of four pulls per round. It was a great decision.

If Midsouth has it for that price with shipping(they do sometimes)that's a good price
.It gets better when you factor in the almost free 500 bullets(have to pay shipping)
That promotion is set to end Dec.31st.You probably won't get those with a used press.
