If your prior setting was not sizing the top third of the case sufficiently to hold the bullet, then another quarter turn will not either. A quarter turn does not equate to .2" or .3". It equates to .017".

So your bullet is being held by .017" of case. That's actually less than the amount of taper crimp you're applying.
I do get it. Nobody is arguing with you about your calculations. I understand exactly what you're saying. The majority of my cases were holding bullets just fine but the inconsistency was not ok with me. 50 rounds is probably not enough to say for sure that the problem is resolved but I'll be firing those 50 as soon as I have a chance and assuming all goes well, I'll load a few hundred more and if I'm still not running into any problems, I'd say the cases are holding the bullets just fine. I guess we'll find out.

If you get it and don't dispute the calculation, then 1. your die is bad or 2. you did something wrong outside of die adjustment, i.e. short stroked while sizing.

Yep. Die seems to be fine now so through the miraculous powers of deduction we can assume it was operator error.

          Fuzzy math!

While J-Cat seems to have a math solution I find the math a bit fuzzy.

When a die is set deeper the entire case is further resized not just the top .017".

So the problem was the operator and the issue is resolved.

Time to quite poking at this one with a stick. It is a done deal.

I'm happy to have helped and someone said they owed me a beer.

The entire case does not hold the bullet. Only the top part. That's the only part we care about for the purposes of this discussion. If a case is dropping bullets a quarter turn away from the die but magically works like a champ at full contact with the die, it means the die is bad.

""The entire case does not hold the bullet. Only the top part."'

What? the 9mm as well as the 45 acp are tapered cases.

The 1/4 turn adjustment sizes the WHOLE case down a few thuosands not just the top.

If they were straight cases then you are correct.

A boolit in a correctly sized case will have plenty of "hold" on it without any crimp at all its whole lenght not just the top part.

My bullets will not move when pushed against the bench even with NO crimp.

Also short stroking the press will ahve the same problem.

The 9mm is not tapered throughout its entire length.

And whoever designs a sizer die to turn a 9mm case into such an animal is a moron.

check a few manuals base is .391 case mouth is .380 that is a taper.

Because of this a very small "screwing in" of the die will size the whole case.

regardless if the case with a 1/4 turn in on the die now hold the bullets fine then problem is solved.

Exactly! If my die works properly when properly installed, I'd say it's a good die.

The 9mm is tapered its entire length, a sizing die "may" be straight sided along the bullet to grip reloaded ammunition and that depends on the die manufacture. As the older carbide dies are with a short single diameter carbide ring. My 9mm chamber is tapered as is my 9mm case gauge, do not confuse what "some" resizing dies do to the case when sized.

This Hornady 9mm Titanium nitride die is tapered so all the people at Hornady must be morons.

Not all 9mm Luger ammunition has the same amount of taper. SAAMI 9mm Luger specifications show a taper of 0.010 inches (head to case neck; 0.014 inches for rim to case mouth).

Below SAAMI taper specifications and variations by manufactures.

My die, set a full turn away from the shell holder, sizes the cases so they hold bullets securely. It's carbide sizer insert is designed and executed correctly. Redding knows what they're doing.

Your own picture shows the taper ends at the base of the bullet. Why don't you measure an actual factory round.

Below is a Redding carbide die, it has a short single diameter carbide ring, it "WILL" make the resized "tapered" case straight sided.

                                That's not a 9mm sizer, this is a 9mm sizer:
