That is not always a good way to tell. I've had case weight differences of 13gr in .223. Even the same brass with the same headstamp can be a few grains off.
It should show a double charge, but if your charge on a .38special is 2.7gr of BE?

The best route is to pull them if you have doubts about a powder charge. Yea it's a pain. But you won't KB your gun.

The Hornady Cam-Lok leaves zero marks vs the RCBS which leaves cut marks on some bullets.

I've pulled 1,000's of 308 bullets with both and IMHO the Hornady is the superior product.

          DO NOT DO THIS!

The cases and bullets will vary in weight enough that you will not get a good reading. If it was a larger cartridge with over 15grs or so of powder then it would be easier to find ones without powder. But Pistol rounds the small charge will be difficult to detect.

              +1 on this method.

I have a 3 ft long chunk of 4x4 lumber left over from fixing a fence. the 4x4 is bolted to a section of 2x12 to keep it upright. This puts it at a comfortable height for me to whack the inertia puller on top of. works well as it usually only takes a whack or two to pop out bullets.

Beelzy's suggestion unfortunately does not work in practice, I tried it with .45 acp's. Way too much case/projectile variance even when using an electronic scale.

I did that earlier during the beginning of the pandemic. I had a ammo can filled with some I was worried that I muffed up. No squibs (zero powder) and no double charges, thankfully, but yeah I had to do that with about 500+

                      +1 for the Hornady.

If you want to mess with it you can use vice grips with taped up jaws. Remove die from press, run shell up through hole, grip bullet just enough, lower ram and pull bullet.

                      Or just buy the Hornady.

This is my plan, thanks. I didnt know what a colllett was.

I KNEW there had to be a better solution than those stupid inertial pullers.

                        Thanks all !!!!!

This ^^^^^^^^ I do the same. Cut it long enough so you can sit down.
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.

I had to pull more than 200 round 9mm and around 150 rounds of 38SPL, I used Hornady Cam Lock Bullet Puller https://www.hornady.com/reloading/pr...et-collets/#!/

I used it on Lee Single Stage and Lee Turret press, it's a breeze.
