I'l put it to you this way

when I had more time than money. yeah buy it and deal with it. sort it, size it, trim it, and on and on.

now that i have far less time and more money. I'll buy 1000 rounds or more from Peterson and go for it. but keep in mind i trash about 250 rounds of brass a year from competition. 10 plus reloadings

Well, nice you have a loose enough chamber. For those of us who don't, a small base die works well and ensures the round chambers every time. Trust me, a case just a touch too big in the base becomes a royal PITA when it doesn't quite lock into battery. Also good if you buy once-fired brass. But don't bother if it works for you.

I have found Lake City Match (matching headstamps) which I jumped on, as I doubt any of that was fired in a machine gun. But it was probably fired in an M14, which are also notorious for abusing brass (it's what I shoot).

I wish I had more brains than money, but I buy "machinegun" brass by the grocery bag for my M14. Between brass ejected in the weeds or culled after the 5th firing, I trash a lot of brass.

"Lake City, matching headstamp", um yeah, it's all MG brass. No matter, SB size it. It's all in the lube. Royal Case and Die Lube by Sharp Shoot R is probably the best I've come across for SB dies. Smells terrible like the cherry/menthol toilet disinfectant at the football stadium, but works great.

I reload for a dozen or more gas operated rifles an never needed small base dies for 308, 223, etc. some have tight match chambers, some are sloppy NATO chambers...I just size it all to the Wilson gauges I have and no problems.

                1. You should see me at the PRS match, I was like an old man on the beach with a metal detector, I found every damn piece of my brass.

                2. I ain't bragging but I can work a weekend and pay for a years worth of brass. So in my current position I'm kinda fortunate to be able to do that. That was not always the case and yeah i picked up everything i could get my hands on and what ever it took to make it work well that was part of the game.

                3. Shooting XTC with a semi and no brass catcher would drive me nuts. But brass catchers suck too so theres that.

What astounded me was the guys shooting 5.56, didn't even bother to pick up any of it. The Garand guys are hunting through the weeds trying to get every last piece. AR guys are packing up and moving to the next firing line.
