500 S&W Reloading Jackpot day

Finally got everything delivered for reloading the 500 mag, cant wait to try out some loads. Just sticking with H110 for now, don't have any reason to go to a lighter load.

Those 440g lead flat nose gas checked bullets are fricken huge! Gonna load a range of powder weights over the next day. Got enough to make 200 rounds, probably gonna order some more brass just to have ~400 rounds on hand at any time.

The Berrys I am gonna run 39.5g - 42.5g loads, trying to keep pressures under 50k and the FPS under 1750fps

The 440g I am going to run at 34.5 - 37.5g keeping the pressure under 49k and aiming for under 1650fps.

Its insane to think of a pistol shooting a 440g bullet at 1600+ fps.

After a short while after being released, S&W changed the spec on the 500 magnum brass to use Large Rifle primers (regular and magnum) due to the firing pin piercing the large pistol primers when running high pressure loads.

So now most guys are running the Starline 500 Mag LRP brass:

And here I think I've got all I can handle sending a measly 240 grain down a .44 pipe at that speed. I'd have to bolt my boots to the floor!

Great. So how do you know if you got a LP or LR? I heard the dimensions between them two were slightly different. One might have been longer actually.

Sounds like we got us a black hawk dow- err another .45 sp/lp issue...

Heh! It will be stout for sure. The first 100 rounds that I bought evidently were light loaded, 300g @ 1500fps ~ 1500ft/lbs of energy.

The 440g will have ~2700ft/lbs of energy and the 350g will have ~2500ft/lbs of energy at max loads.

But also, don't forget the 500 Mag with the 8 3/8" barrel is 15" long and 70oz in weight. It helps mitigate some of the recoil. I have a buddy with a snubnose 44Magnum, that when couple with fullhouse loads, its very very sharp and almost painfull recoil

Makes my arthritis hurt just thinking about it ;-). But, yeah. I shoot my .44 mags out of a Ruger SRH and S&W 29. The SRH wins in the recoil handling department. Keep us posted as to your loads and results.

The muzzle brake on the 500 and 460 really helps tame the recoil. The harder you push them the better the brake works. Now the 700 grain bullets are a different story all together

Mike, the dies you have pictured are steel and not carbide. Do you lube the brass beforehand? Do you plan on running a separate crimp die on the 650?

I am gonna lube the cases for sure, i do that even with carbide (on my rifle rounds).

They were recommended to me by Dillon so I went with them.

When I was talking to the guys at dillon the recommended not using a separate crimp die, and just using the seating roll crimp, and making it a deep roll, with the RCBS dies.
