Now THAT is cool. Wonder how much they cost if he made them as they were... Would be nice to have it set to give a readout of each of your ammos before they drop off the ramp from the press...

Not that hard actually. I'm working on an optical circuit that will count each round that drops and will output to a digital counter. I'm also working on another sensor that will watch for projectiles so you don't end up with a mess of powder among your completed rounds.

Would be totally cool if there was one that could take measurements off the falling rounds and display them before they hit the tube and slid down...

The first line was in response to someone elses statement that digital calipers read to 0.0005" while dial calipers only read to 0.0010".

If someone is so dumb that they can't "read between the lines" on a dial caliper, then perhaps the statement is true...

Perhaps I misunderstood your statement then. Arm waving analog v dial nomenclature not withstanding.

Analog/dial has more "interpretive resolution". Digital has more discreet display resolution. Seems you spoke to the discreet resolution then initiated the interpretive resolution comparison. In that case we agree.

From a metrology perspective they are equivalent. Best practice permits one "eyeball" division. Certain things like comparative roundness is easier to see with dials "wiggling" between divisions even if no cal lab will certify the accuracy of such. The measurement becomes relative at that point which may be useful depending just what you're dtermining.

Mostly because a good set of calipers is not only about accuracy, it's about operation and use. The mechanism, slide, control, and if digital there is also battery life. Cheap calipers just feel cheap to me, and in most cases if left on will run that batteries into the dirt. A decent set of Mitutoyos doesn't exhibit this battery problem, will feel much nicer in use, and be plenty accurate. If true accuracy was needed, get a micrometer.

It amazes me how this topic always comes up here. Obviously calipers are useful in reloading. It also amazes me that people consider $100 to be an expensive tool.

I have a pair of fairly inexpensive Chinese calipers with a remote display that gets a feed through a proprietary wireless protocol. A friend developed it, but the couldn't bring the cost of manufacturing down, and the patent department didn't grant him a patent on it, so he gave up on the idea. His firmware turns the caliper off quickly so that battery is not a problem in the caliper or remote display. The remote has about 3/4" numbers, making it easy to read. Nice to use on a mill or lathe.

Yup...$100..not $300....or $2500 as some might propose we are "promoting". I have some HF's at my reloading bench I picked up as part of a lot buy and a pair of Japanese Yuasa dials I purchased 30 years ago when I started my machining career. The Yuasa's, though rather economy feel 10X better in your hand. The HF's are sharp and blocky, but they function OK for infrequent use.

At work I have a pair of basic $100 Mitutoyo Absolut digitals in my toolbox and my older pair of Starret dials at my desk for more impromptu measuring. Both feel better than the ones at my reloading bench.

Some people appreciate good tools...cost not being the measure, but rather other perfomance aspects..some which are "felt" vs. measured. Other folks appreciate the cheapest way to accomplish the task. Then there are hypocrites.

Same here. Great value is available in used quality tools. Like used guns, quality lasts decades and even generations. Most of my calipers were purchased new, but.....mics, height gauges, telescoping gauges, set up equipment, etc were mostly used.

There ya go. Mitutoyo is kinda unique with the access port TMK. I've found them to need it more than others though, so....
