    calipers

Anyone know where to take calipers for zeroing. I have a Mititoyo dial caliper that even though the hand points to zero on the scale it is .0020 on the short side. I read that it can be adjusted, but I don't have the little thingamobob tool to do it. Thanks, Bill

If you were closer I'd say stop by. Are there any machine shops near your area? I'd call them up.

However, Mitutoyo calipers (and many other gear type) come with the little brass formed shim stock tool. You insert that in the trough to lift the gear off the rail. You can then retard or advance tooth by tooth.

My Mitutoyo calipers that I've owned for 30+ years just started acting weird. It won't hold a zero. Every time I open and close it, it reads differently. Anywhere from .020" - .050" with the jaws closed.

That usually means that the gears aren't meshing and it's skipping. Attempt cleaning any debris out and then lube with a lightweight oil... I usually use 3in1 on all my stuff.

That's because you're using digital calipers... Yuk. I don't care for those because they lack "feel," and watching a dial is much better for measuring runout in real-time. It makes it easier to find middle endurance on things.

Buy some vernier calipers and kiss calibration good bye.

'Course I do love my digital calipers.

you've probably got a flake of powder on the rack gear. You need to clean any debris that may have accumulated on the rack gear. As mentioned above, they make a "tool" so you can make the pinion gear skip a tooth, but you can make one by smashing the end of a paper clip, and fishing it between the pinion gear and the rack gear. Hint, it feels like you are breaking something when you do it, but it'll snap into the next tooth, typically, there are only 4 spots it can drop in, .025, .050, .075, and .000. good luck!

The gold piece is simply pushed down to disengage it from the toothed rail. Index your dial wherever you want zero, then push down and close the calipers, then release the pin tool and adjust the face. That's it!

Don't be stilly, dial calipers don't have cheap buttons.
