spp vs. lpp in .45acp

I also share the hatred of the spp brass, however, the guy who came up with that is pretty well known by everyone. So, for academic purposes, class is in session.
When Lord Browning introduced his pistol in .45 ACP, after being told that his .32 ACP was too wimpy, he gave forth his cartridge as well. Which also used... a spp. When production was slow and QC was tight before the war the firing pin holes were drilled with tight tolerance and the firing pins would close to center.
Once wartime production started and tolerances loosened up reliability went down as firing pins started hitting off center too far to set off the cartridge. The solution? A larger primer, and hence for the lpp .45 ACP, not as his majesty intended.
So going off on the guy who started the spp .45... maybe not the right guy to after. However, I would agree that there is no use for it anymore as the lpp brass is far more common now. For uniformity sake if for no other reason I wish it would go away.Comment

I will use and load both for the same reasons you do. It's just a matter of sorting the cases by primer size.
I prefer A-cups and B-cups, personally, but hey, whatever works!

I agree. Also, they allow you to dip into your spp stores if you run out of lpp. And you don't have to change your priming system (if that's a big deal).
But like .40 S&W, .45 spp cases are unwanted by the masses, so you can get a decent deal on them.==================

I have been schooled. I am better for said schooling. Now let me take this to my conclusion.
If I've got this right, Mr Browning in his infinite wisdom designed the 45ACP with a spp and only when contractors were unable to keep within tolerances did the power that be at the time decided to change to lpp?
Well if that's the case, I propose that any and all interested in honoring the great man should consider moving back to the original vision.
I have loaded another 500 rounds and I am convinced I'm going to stay with the spp. They just seat easier on the Dillon 650.Comment

Well, you do have a point there. I enjoy gluttony at times when it comes to that subject and it is hard to motorboat a-cups. Well, they get all mad because you have to squeeze extra hard- Anyways...7 Billion people on the planet. They aint ALL gonna astronauts. Some will get hit by trains...

Sure! Just always naturally gravitated toward petiteness, I guess. I once dated a 5' 10" woman so equipped. Let's just say they were very sensitive primers that always went bang. :-) And above all, the woman herself was a sweetheart of a person.
That said, as with all things, including whether the case uses small primers or large primers, as long as things work well, I'm OK either way. Matter of fact, I've got about 200 cases of the SPP version to run through the tumbler and load up.
BTW, I've found that even the CCI aluminum .45 ACP cases now use Boxer SPP's (used to be Berdan) and *are* reloadable. I've gotten three loadings out of them so far with one split (same kind of split you see with brass cases).Last edited by Cowboy T; 10-02-2015, 10:15 AM."San Francisco Liberal With A Gun"

Do you resize them? It was told to me in passing the secret to them is to NOT resize them. But I have not messed with them yet.7 Billion people on the planet. They aint ALL gonna astronauts. Some will get hit by trains...

Yep, I do. Same with the steel Wolf/Tulammo cases. Since aluminum is pretty soft, it doesn't take much effort to go through the resizing die. When they split, they get tossed like any other split case.
That said, I do prefer brass cases due to their well-demonstrated longevity. But SPP or LPP, either's fine."San Francisco Liberal With A Gun"

I read somewhere that the reason 45acp has a lpp is because its parent cartridge is/was the 30-06. The rim and cartridge diameter are the same. lrp are a little deeper but that was a easy correction on the cartridge making machine, easier than a new diameter primer pocket. If you want change you have to put in your 2 cents, you can't just sit on the sidelines and whine.Comment

Hey OP, I wasn't saying your opinion on the matter was wrong, not at all. I don't load on a dillon so I have no dog in that fight.
I was merely just throwing out some random facts I thought people would enjoy. If you prefer the spp brass due to the ease of loading in your press, who am I to tell you you're wrong?Comment

My response was an attempt at humor. I appreciated your post 100% and thank you for the history.
I fully expect grief for my change in attitude towards lpp and enjoy the banter.Comment
