Just a point to ad about the cases u are NOT using cause they are breaking ur decaping pin.
Have u looked inside those cases with a flash light? If u see one flash hole ur good, but some have 2 flash holes, those are bredan primed and u should toss those shells. No good to u. They will break every pin u try on them.

Hey thanks for tip on the bredans , I checked and they were. I had called lee and they told me that sometimes the military crimped case can cause problems with decapping pins. It turns out you were right they were the bredans

Glad to help. Trust me I have broken my fair share of decaping pins on those. The darn Lee sizing ball kept popping out the top and I said "I'll fix this" and cranked on the locking nut!! I said that should do it.... And next case "pop" the pin broke!!! Aaaahhhhhh that did it alright! Ahahahaha
Carefull they show up in most verities of nato ammo, ie 30-06, 223, 308, 7.62/39,7.62/54r and so on lol.Comment

How did you resize your brass in the first place? How did you get regular primers to stay in the pocket. They should have fallen out. Better yet, I am curious how you got the berdan primers removed.Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.
I really miss the good old Pomona Gun Shows.

I think he is saying that those berdan cases were the ones breaking his decaping pin. He thought they were just really tight or his decaping pins were maybe defective. In any case that brass never made it to processing.Comment

I had a similar problem with PPU brass in a Remington 700 SPS. I loaded other brass in the same batch and those fired fine. I had go back and separate any PPU brass I had.
The PPU brass was sized correctly according to the Wilson .308 gauge however it had expanded enough after firing that I needed a rubber mallet to tap the bolt open. First time I had experienced this with anything I had reloaded.And so it goes...Comment

All of that depends on the skill of the reloader, The Wilson case gage is a very precision tool, it is a datum based tool. Most reloaders refer to the Wilson case gage as a 'drop-in gage'. A reloader with a straight edge and feeler gage can turn the Wilson case gage in to a very accurate gage.Forget the Wilson case gauge and buy a Hornady cartridge case headspace gauge. The Hornady gauge is far more accurate and you only need that gauge for every different caliber.
Many reloaders have limited skills, the Wilson case gage has been with us for over 60 years, a very few reloaders caught on from the very beginning, the rest continue to believe all the answers will come with the next tool.

I've attached a picture of cases that have begun to separate. The lower "ring" is just the webbing. The thin ring above that is where the case is separating. You can take a paper clip and bend the tip and run it in the case along the side. If it hangs up just above the webbing, the case is separating and you should not use that case again.
Not sure why you would get that with a light load. Have you measured the diameter of the bullets to make sure they're not oversized?Attached FilesComment

I have to wonder if your source sold you machine gun fired brass. Other thoughts are since this brass was not fired in your rifle and factory ammo and brass fired in your rifle works fine there is probably nothing wrong with the rifle. I go now to setting the sizer die and if it in fact is set correct or incorrect and the brass still comes out sticky then we have 2 choices a long die or bad brass. The pictures don't show a crushed shoulder to stick up in the chamber so he is setting the seat right. By the way it isn't just a machine gun that is hard on brass any long chamber can do it but a gas gun semi auto that's hot and with a long chamber and be a bad case of voodoo on any case. I'm probably not explaining all of this right but I can expand on it if you have questions. Kouye has a good pic of incipient and near full head separation and that is exactly what happens from a long chamber, hot and long chamber in a semi or full auto or a long chamber bolt gun. HTHJ-CAT
Tell us moreabout the brass. Where did you get it? How are you sizing it? What is the fired base diameter? Sized base diameter?
the brass is mixed brass Once fired , i think i got it from rmrbullets.com
,ppu, fc, and some pmc, i have some military crimped stuff that i have been holding off on since they have been breaking my lee decapping pin.
I am using the lee universal rifle die set using the full length sizer.

when you setup the die, is it just touching the shellplate or do you give it an extra 1/8th turn ? yes
when you put the resized brass in your Wilson guage is it also flush at the base with the guage ? yes
have you tried putting one of your ready brass in your rifle and chamber it to see it chambers and ejects properly. NO Primer... yes I will make a couple dummy rounds and check again

but the shell plate one yes it touches the shell plate to where I am having the handle give that last little pop.
oh and don't think I have said that I am using a dillon precision 550
I usually decap then take it out do a 30 or so like that clean out primer pocket etc then start priming /charging and seating bullet

This is a reloading forum, a reloader should be able to determine if a die has the ability to size a case to minimum length/full length size. A reloader should measure the length of cases from the shoulder/datum to the head of the case before sizing.we have 2 choices a long die or bad brass.
Then there is 'must have been fired in a machine gun'. No one weighs cases, no one measures, there are times the case has more resistance to sizing than the press, die and lube can overcome. Meaning? The case whips the press.
Back to 'this is a reloading forum', is there a reloader on this forum that can measure 'by how much' in thousandths?

Does anyone know how to make a set of gages that could be used to measure a tapered case diameter?
If the case has more resistance to sizing than the press can overcome the die does not make it to the shell holder. If the die does not make it to the shell holder when the ram is raised a gap is created between the bottom of the die and top of the shell holder. When determining the amount of the case that did not get pushed into the die the reloader could measure the gap with a feeler gage. Or, the reloader could remove the shell holder before lowering the ram, after removing the shell holder the reloader could then remove the die with the case protruding from the bottom. After removing the die with the case the reloader could measure the amount of protruding case. In the perfect world there should be .125" case head protrusion.
The shell holder prevents the case head from being sized, it is not possible to size the bottom .125" of the case, then there is the radius at the opening of the die.
reloaders covet head space gages, I use head space gages as transfers and standards, If I was curious about the difference in dies by different manufacturers I would use a standard, I would use a head space gage, if I did not have one that was useful I would make it. Checking dies with one standard would enable the reloader to determine the difference between dies of different manufacturers, and the same manufacturer.
I have dies that are different, not by design but by mistake.

It's obvious you have never dealt with brass cases that were fired in a long hot chamber and how much they stretch and the effects of stretching that much. Let me help you, they get resized then reloaded and on the next firing they develop a incipient head separation or completely separate. Oh yes after resizing you will have to trim those long cases....a lot. How do I know this you wonder, because that's exactly what happened to me when I bought a batch of "machine gun" fired brass out of the Shotgun News. Ya there are still a lot of us that still weigh cases and measure them, amazing huh. If the cases weren't measured how the hell would I know they needed to be trimmed. Have a nice day Mr. F.
