I am working on getting this running under WINE. So far so good. This should be interesting.

0o0o0o0o0o0o0o0o0o. Now THAT can be very nice. How do you go about doing that? Try to run it in Linux first and then when there is an issue running get WINE and then run it through WINE and see what happens?

Been playing for days. Flawless on Play On Linux, was a little more rough to get it running on vanilla wine. Frame rate is "acceptable" but nothing to wow about. Otherwise, glitch free.

The catch is if you get sound popping you are dealing with a screwed up part of linux that no one wanted but everyone uses: Pulse Audio. The Audio backend from HELL.. Years now and they haven't gotten it working right. The trick is to either switch to two channel in the sound control applet or just point wine at the front channel of Pulse Audio's 5.1 system. Aka, pulse and surround do not play well together. Hell they still have yet to figure out proper independent base level control in 5.1 mode resulting in booming audio. Yeah. Pulse needs to die in a fire.

how can we as end users fix that or develop that properly? I thought Linux was all about user development and crap like that. :\

I upgraded my 5-year computer (4GB, well 3.5GB RAM) just to play POE. Put in two SSDs and 16GB memory, and now it loads crazy quick.

FWIW, they should add a loading progress bar.

YEah cause I HATE seeing that damn screen as I just sit and wait and wait and wait...

I wonder now how torchlight is compared to this. I bought that some time ago, but because I purchased it I never loaded it up.

Pulse seems to be driven by the same kind of crazy devs that drove Ubuntu to Unity and Gnome Team to Gnome 3, two decisions that actually broke the back of the community pretty heavily.

Pulse Audio is pretty much here to stay, the general concesus is that it will get fixed in time and 99% of distros support pulse and most of their systems are based about pulse. You can rip pulse out, I did once, it fixed the issue but broke a lot of other things. So far I have just decided to work about it's idiocyncracies because I don't have the cycles to go full on pulse back end dev and try to get to the root of the problem... which I personally believe was an attempt to make a single unified Audio Backend for all of linux. Before there were quite a few, OSS was getting long in the tooth, ALSA was where it was at but it seems everyone just stopped developing ALSA.

Essentially the problem with pulse is that it is a massive abstraction layer. It is probably one of the more powerful concepts, but it introduces latencies and buffer over-under runs. That is what is happening with the popping sound problem and other similar things. Everything works off of a virtual adapter really. JACK is probably the best for hardcore music making. Frankly I want ALSA back. I don't need network audio for example.
