I don't think it's that bad but I have enough time in beta tests to get more than a bit worried about it going live...

Bah, kids today don't appreaciate fighting in a mech made from cobbled pieces of savlaged mechs because we couldn't make parts or new mechs in any sort of quantity any longer in the Inner Sphere. I fought in the 3rd Successor War, damn kids.

Also that the game does not have legging bites. You need to put mechs face down in the dirt, it is the ultimate insult. Sort of like Clubbing them with their own blown off arm or leg.

Am I the only person who thinks the franchise peaked at MW2? I never should have gotten rid of my battletech stuff.

MW3 was also good. MW4 is alright but just not the same...

Personally I think it was the re-optimization of the controls away from joysticks and towards mice. The whole point (IMO) of the original game was to have users memorize an unfathomable amount of controls to get these virtual contraptions moving and playing.

Of course, if anyone made such a game now optimized so joystick players had a huge advantage, it would never sell. IMO.

The battletech game was simplistic, but pretty fun as I recall.

Free 2 play.. I guess I'll give this one a shot.

edit: After looking at the "founder" options... now I'm kinda worried about something to be honest. The 50% bonus for earned xp and c-bills for a "premium" account is fine, however the $40-$80 worth of in game items worries me. Since it's free I'll give it a shot, and I don't necessarily have a problem with spending money on a F2P game(bonus xp, extra slots, etc.) but pay 2 win(idiots dumping hundreds of dollars into the game... *cough DIABLO 3 RMAH cough*, yeah people will do it and it completely obliterates any feeling of competitiveness.
agreed, "free 2 play, pay to win" games suck after a few weeks...

had a buddy ask for refund of his founder money after playing the beta.

said the current maps available to play were too small to make use of any form of teamwork. map size is small than the range of PPC's and LRM's and currently the maps are of the hot kind so overheating is really easy. and with certain starter mechs where you get 3 ppc's to start, you overheat after two salvo's while if you only load medium lasers you can get more shots in before overheating, with actual higher DPS than the PPC's.

I got a refund as well.

Maps were too small. Not all of the maps were of the hot variety, but those seemed to come up way more often than they should, easily countered by dropping something to add more heatsinks though. However, any of the extended long range stuff, or LRMs you could pretty much shoot from one side of the map to the other.

No weapon combo configuration outside of combat. This is just annoying. You can't even change your weapon combos before the match has started while you're waiting on other people to join.

                        Ramming detection was problematic.

No chat outside of a friends list or the horrible chat during a match, made it impossible to try and organize anything aside from using the forum. With no in-game voice chat, and the maps being so small, typing is pretty much suicide so there's no teamwork at all unless you set something up in advance on the forum.

Limited mech selection. With as many mech designs as they had available to use, there's what, 6 or 7? Seems a little lacking. No paint/emblem customization either.

Still no details about how the factions affect anything(or really if they matter at all). They finally let people know what the mech xp bonuses were for, a bunch of lackluster bonuses that amount to going down a checklist since you're going to get them all anyway(it's not like you have a choice between one bonus or another).

Every complaint I have about the game is something that is fixable, not necessarily an issue with the overall design itself. But considering how late it is in the beta and some basic things have yet to be implemented or fixed, the launch of this game seems like it's going to be a massive disappointment. They aren't even discussing upcoming features or anything(horrible move on their part) so after playing this beta for a couple of hours it feels like you just finished playing a demo with no expectation of it getting any better.

Of course when I asked for my refund I got the "but you should wait, it's going to get better". No, I don't want to play your game for free, let alone have any money tied up in it. I've been wanting a mechwarrior/battletech game for years, and this is not it.

wow, thats too bad. I played the original and was hoping with the modern programing they could get a nice game together. It can't be that hard. The only thing I can think is that they are too worried about not getting enough sales...and without a firm committment to put out a great game they will not get enough sales...lose lose situation.

Worst case scenario is that the free2play game does poorly and makes it appear to execs that there is little to no interest in the mechwarrior/battletech franchise and we end up not getting a proper game for a few more years./

Steel Battalion on the x-box did pretty poorly thanks to it's huge and expensive controller required for use on a console(and they never bothered with a PC port...), so the closest thing to a "proper game" we have is steel battalion 2 on the 360 that's made even worse due to the stupid kinect controls. The only other similar games would be the Armored Core series, but that's not exactly popular outside of Japan(plus it also plays way too fast to really be compared to mechwarrior) and is struggling as a franchise due to so much repetitiveness.

Yeah, I got that. Signed up for the beta back when it was announced a few months ago. Looks interesting, but not exactly mechwarrior. Closer to armored core in a way(at least that's what it seemed like to me based off of the videos anyway), not that it's a bad thing.
