The pre-orders that AT&T are doing will be shipped to your house with the exception of those who are exchanging an iphone they bought within the last 30 days.

So if you preorder an iphone you will probably get it sometime in the afternoon on the 24th via the mail (unless something happens with the postal carrier) or you can wait in line the morning of the 24th and hope to have one in your hands that morning.

          AT&T service nightmare!

Here's my recent experience. And I strongly URGE anyone from any OTHER carrier besides AT&T who is considering on trying an iPhone.

First: I've been a long time customer of Verizon Wireless. (Maybe not that long, but 4-5 years and I've currently have 3 phone lines with them. I finished my contract on all three lines, my latest being the LG 1st Gen. Voyager. (When it came out!).

My Voyager was on a month-to-month and I used it to talk/text. Browser sucked and the phone itself was about to die.

My biggest debate was on the Droid and the iPhone. I wanted the iPhone for the longest time and I was somewhat timid about AT&T service in my area.

I decided to go ahead and port my /Voyager/ line to AT&T to 'try' a iPhone.
And I have to say, Apple makes some great stuff! Its capabilities completely blew me a away. From iTunes (I don't use an ipod, figured the phone would suffice) and e-mail services etc etc.

Unfortunately my house is a dead zone and I couldn't get half a signal to keep my calls from dropping in my house. It was odd that I had full bars of 3G to Searching every few minutes. I'm no expert, but if my phone drops a thirty minute conversation 6 times, it just ain't gonna work.

Let's back track and get some history here:

I did all my research; reading Early termination fees, etc.
I went to Authorized AT&T retailers, asked them about the iPhone- and they mentioned that if I try one and return it, they require a 30% restocking fee. (Then again, YMMV)

So I thought I'd do this the clever way. I'd buy the phone from Wal-mart because they don't charge a restocking fee and are pretty lenient with returns.

          (At Wal-mart)
The service representative (Electronics kiosk guy) did everything perfectly. My number was ported and I was enjoying my new iPhone! Surprising enough, some guys who work at Wal-Mart know their stuff?!? (Maybe- we'll see...)

          _____________________________________
          Back to reality:
          (After 4 days of service)

I realize, this isn't for me. I love the iPhone, I love Macbooks and Apple is a great company! But the phone must go back and I begin my journey to restore status quo.

Here's the break-down to my first bill.
          39.99 First Month=prorated to 4 days (Yay!) $ 4.00
30.00 Data Plan = (I knew this was coming) $30.00
39.00 2nd Month ahead =(...Ok) some carriers do this. $39.00
Activation charge= (ugh! waived for 3 days or less) $35.00

Just over $120 on my first bill for trying an iPhone for 4 days.
I was really hoping I'd get away for a bit cheaper... heck I got off a
30% restocking fee when I returned it!

          ___________________________________
          Remember those Wal-Mart guys?
When I returned my iPhone (Which went rather smoothly)
and got my Voyager working again (barely). I figured everything was done and over with... Lesson learned.

AT&T sends me ANOTHER bill asking for $175.00 for an Early Termination Fee ETF.

I call them, explain my situation and they tell me: You violated OUR policy by porting your number back to VZW. You see Mr. X, our policy states that the 30 day guarantee applies only to these 3 reasons for ending service:

          1.) Buyers remorse.
          2.) Military Discharge
          3.) Death

Okay, so I'm a little angry now (to say the least!) And I tell the AT&T CS Rep that NOWHERE on the website is that stated. In fact, after he placed me on hold several times, I read it to him directly off the website. I ported out because I wasn't satisfied with your service, does that count for buyers' remorse?

          (Hold Please)

Ultimately, they changed their mind and gave me another excuse. "There's no notification on your account that indicates the actual equipment was returned. (WHAT!?!) Therefore, we must charge you a $175.00 restocking fee unless otherwise. (The Wal-mart guy has to note this on my account!)

          __________________________________
This is getting long. Let's wrap it up.

2 days later and holding some more on the phone with Wal-Mart. Their kiosk Rep made two calls to AT&T to verify my return and credit my account.

I hope this is finally over.

          Who's fault was it?
A bit of mine for trying an iPhone WITH AT&T.
          The Wal-mart Rep (Definitely)

Just warning you all about my story.

I now use an HTC Incredible and I love it!
          John

I was just at the AT&T store and from what I gathered from the employee working there was that you can have it shipped to your house but you would have to go into the store to activate it because of the SIM card. She seemed kinda confused about the whole pre-order so I dunno if she is right or not, and they were like do you want your new iPhone just dropped off at your house if you don't happen to answer the door. But I did ask about the whole unlimited data being grandfathered in for us 3g users and they confirmed that it was true and the two new data plans were for new AT&T users only.

Pre-order on the AT&T or Apple website, or both?
