There is no week nor day nor hour, when tyranny may not enter upon this country, if the people lose their supreme confidence in themselves -- and lose their roughness and spirit of defiance -- Tyranny may always enter -- there is no charm, no bar against it -- the only bar against it is a large resolute breed of men.

VPN is pretty much a lie....
Unless you are doing to get around a GEO fence... say you are .mil and want to watch NETFLIX while deployed... Then a VPN might work...
If you watch the videos on you tube that explain a lot of the VPN myths
If you use a VPN and type..... they know who you are by your typing fingerprint....Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED
Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)
Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET
Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT

The typing thing would only work when the keystrokes are being passed real time. That is not often. For instance I just typed this reply into a client side form, and then transmitted it all at once. That is how most forums work, most shopping websites, most everything.VPN is pretty much a lie....

VPN may not be all it is cracked up to be, but the typing thing isn't usually an issue. If I was worried about real time typing, I'd use the speech dictation feature of IOSLast edited by SkyHawk; 10-05-2021, 4:21 PM.Comment

Anyone create their own VPN over VPS? Let me know your experience. I'm looking at options for this. Hosting, platforms, and VPN software.

If you can't navigate the linux command line stop reading. Otherwise ...
I just used a cheap linux VPS. No software other than openVPN. The setup wasn't trivial, but there is a lot of helpful info out there. I used it primarily to appear to be in a different geographical region.
If you are trying for complete anonymity, it's not a good solution. One court order to the provider and they will give up your details for sure. Most will cancel your account when they start getting nasty letters.
I've also setup a VPS to use a VPN provider. That was a non trivial setup.
You can get a VPS for as little as $4/year. Anything with an IP address is $10/yr or more. The under $10 are NAT where you only get some ports forwarded to a VPS. Works fine for a VPN. Even the cheapies come with at least 100GB/mo of bandwidth.
Here is site that maitains a list of offers. There are hundreds listed here. https://lowendstock.com/Comment

Hey nice and sure the ISP could say who paid for the VPS, but do they sniff what traffic goes in and out of there? I'd like to build my own private Tor network of sorts.

I used to use freeswan & openswan on VMs to get around. Spin up a VM at work, have it connect to my home FW, then I have a VPN that I control instead of using their VPN client that doesnt allow split tunneling. Split tunneling is when only certain traffic traverses the tunnel. Not allowing split tunneling means all internet traffic traverses the tunnel.
My machines and cubicle have been taken down since I havent been in the office since 2018. I have to use corporate vpn, but I run that in a docker container and only route corp traffic to it. That way I can choose what traffic goes through corporate.
Ive had a VPS for about 12 years from Datarealm. Its mainly used for DNS, and to have a dedicated machine out there for testing. I wouldnt use it as a VPN gateway. If Im going to do shady stuff (bittorrent) I want to go outside the country so Im not the low hanging fruit. Its going to be a bit more work to chase down an offender in another country with tighter privacy laws.
I had a VPN to my mother in laws house in the Netherlands so my wife could watch her Dutch shows... that didnt last long. Pretty much have to fly out there to fix it. Its just easier to use Private Internet Access. We have it on the Firestick. She connects to the Netherlands, and watches her Dutch TV stuff.Last edited by xfer42; 10-08-2021, 11:47 PM.Comment

$2.21/mo, PIA is less.
My brother received a copyright infringement notice, so I got him PIA, $79 for 39 months ($2.03/month).
Havent used Surfshark.
I can tell you I usually top out at ~1MBs, sometimes it goes to ~1.7MBs on PIA using bittorrent. I miss the days of going in the clear and screaming at 30MB/s and downloading the 8GB movie in less than 5 mins.Comment
