EXACTLY !! and you have to keep your laptop on 24/7 to have any type of normalcy if you need to get on quick.....and the reboot times after a install.....is just bad.

As far as security goes, Win 7 is very dangerous to run for anything other than games and fun stuff

The security updates are bare minimum and hardware support is nil.

I would not trust it over win 10

IN light of all the snooping by OS manufactures I switched to Debian Linux. I don't care of the latest. I do run Chrome for web browsing since new Firefox is more prone to crashing!

Windows 10 is perfectly fine. Install the N edition to automatically prevent some unneeded crap from being installed. Do a clean install, not a migration or upgrade. Remove other crap using powershell and uninstall all the junk you don't want. It'll take 20 minutes unfortunately, but after that it's not too bad.

if you don't like the stupid tiles on the start menu, you can actually remove all of them (I think you right click on the top corner of whatever section is there and remove it). It's not that bad, and runs perfectly fine on my machine. It boots faster than 7 (by architecture...the notion that 10 boots slower than 7 in general is wrong).

That said, Windows 7 is perfectly fine. Security updates happen as needed still, and if you've got good AV and otherwise patch your apps you'll be fine. 10 is inherently more secure than 7, but if you do your part and don't open everything you get in your inbox you'll be fine.

I only use Linux on my personal PCs. I have an Arch install and a couple of Mint installs.

I do use Win 10 on my PC at work simply because they want to use Office for everything and the admin doesn't want a Linux box on the network.

The core kernel of the OS and the Microsoft drivers are updated for Win 7. This does not include all drivers or all software on your machine.

What he said, plus Win10 has a much stricter security policy set and new security features earlier versions will never get.




The reason enterprises are lagging has nothing to do with the merit of WIn10 vs Win7, it's just typical enterprise lag. Enterprises will absolutely be phasing Win7 out over time, and Win10 is the successor. Get used to it.

As a side note, I've used every version of NT since NT 3.51, and I don't see the big deal. The OS and shell (which is what most OS wankers complain about) only exists to run applications software. If you're spending much time actually interacting with the shell rather than getting work done, you're absolutely doing it wrong.

I only use Linux on my personal PCs.

I do some gaming and I like to fiddle with Photoshop, so I do use Win10 at home, but my work is all done on VMs that are running on my personal ESXi box. Those include many versions of both Linux and Windows and are accessed via RDP or other remote means.

I have twenty laptops at the moment. 17, are on Win7, one is on Linux Mint, One is on Win8.1, and one on WinX, that is used for experimental purposes.

Win 10 for me... multiple machines. One last Win 7 machine to phase out soon too.

I would be fine with 7 or 10, really don't care, but I went full buy-in with what MS is doing on the cloud side with their business subscriptions to Office 365 and you really have a lot of benefits to win 10 that Win 7 doesn't.

AzureAD connected domains on the desktop for one is reason enough to go Win10 for everything.

End of the day, really just depends on how to intend on using this stuff.

I use Windows 7 in a Virtual Box so I can still run older software that doesn't run on Windows 10.
I don't understand why people don't like Windows 10, it runs just as well as Windows 7.

Just because you don't have a need for Win 10, doesn't mean there isn't a need for Win 10.

I would rather pay for Win 10 at this point, than use a free copy of 7 because of the additional cost savings and benefits I have seen from Win 10.

As I mentioned above, it just depends on your needs. I am now savings thousands because I no longer need an in-house domain controller with Win 10.

For what I do, Win 7 now feels like a dated operating system.

Many will use Win7 because their older software and/or hardware isn't supported through Win10.
What bothers me is that Microsoft originally claimed Win10 will be the last windows... with yearly anniversary updates.... Seems now that they revoked that claim and Windows 10 mainstream support will end Oct 2020 and extended support 2025. I guess that just means they won't call their "next" OS Windows.
