You are confusing Win XP with Win 7. Win XP is no longer supported. Win 7 is supported for a few more years. No security issues there.

Actually, he's right, and you're wrong. I would think most people's definition of "support" matches that of "Mainstream support" and not "Extended support".

"Mainstream Support" for Windows 7 ended in 2015, meaning patches are only available for security issues. Patches for non-security issues are only available with Extended Hotfix Support, and not at all for consumer desktop operating systems.

In practice though, most of the non-security bugs were shaken out a long time ago, so the fact that only security patches are available from now until 2020 isn't a big deal.

I don't see any reason to switch my existing machines from Win 7 to Win 10, but at the same time, I don't see any reason to install Windows 7 on a new system instead of Windows 10.

I've been running 7 for years and it's worked perfectly as far as I can tell. However, I just had to buy myself a new computer and since Solidworks won't be supporting 7 in the not too distant future, the new computer is going to be running 10. I'm hoping for the best.

The built in one is not terrible, for more coverage like IDS and so on I'd go w/ Norton.

My BIOS had it's last update 2010.

I'd have to upgrade to an i5 or greater and board that supports it to keep up with Win10...

I use Windows 7 in a Virtual Box so I can still run older software that doesn't run on Windows 10.
I don't understand why people don't like Windows 10, it runs just as well as Windows 7.

I don't like it for a few reasons:

It's legal spyware.
Too invasive.
You can completely shut off automatic updates, but it's a pain.
Crappy gaming platform for older games.

In fact, it runs a little better than Win7 on boot up, unless you know how to write a fastboot for Win7. In that case, the only WinX advantage over Win7, is null and void.

The security updates are bare minimum and hardware support is nil.

Not true. Win7 is very safe to use No one I know has had ANY problems with security. Keep the firewall on, AV running, and scan for malware once in a while. No problem.

And the best platform for newer games. How old are your games FFS? I play AoE2 on 10 and it's fine, CounterStrike, fine, Zoo Tycoon 2, fine.
