There's been a bunch of burglaries this year in the West L.A. area where I live. I already have a very secure place including video cameras and 24 hr digital recording, but the cameras are sort of up high. My wife said she saw on the monitor some hooded guy come up to the front door a couple times and just stand there until one of my 3 german shepherds heard the dude and flipped out, my wife could never see the guys face.
This summer I added a game camera type camera mounted inside a matching steel box with a padlock and mounted it on the fence next to the front door at about face level. I purposely bought one with a visible white flash so any bad guy would know their picture was just taken.
I forgot about it and this weekend remembered I need to take that camera down to recharge the batteries, so I decided to take a look at the storage card too.
There was a lot of pictures of my wife and I coming and going, and also 3 pictures of 3 different bad guys at different times on different nights, I was very surprised. I hear the dogs bark at night and then they stop so I assume it's nothing, but evidently some guys had been coming up to our door.
I've printed the bad guys photos and will be giving those to PD.
Video cameras with a recorder are good but you here a noise in the night and never go back and rewind and see what was there, the game camera is better in a way because you'll get a good picture of the person's face. Just an idea, those game cameras are inexpensive.

Did you see the part of the photos where a dude is coming and going with your wife but the dude aint you! Ha Ha! Maybe cameras are too much info...

They opened every cupboard and drawer, etc... It's like they knew the address, and what they were looking for, but didn't know where once they got in.

I don't want to share how to get the safe open publicly. Let's just say my next safe, if I even get another, won't have any buttons or biometric readers. Just a big old fashioned dial.

If they successfully attacked an electronic lock you had a cheap one. Was it a StackON by chance?

OK, you guys have a point. GunVault, with the four buttons on the top, one per finger. He hit the button area with just a regular hammer. The metal of the rest of the safe doesn't extend to the area under the buttons. It's a separate piece of metal, apparently not so strong, and that's where the locking mechanism is. Boom done. It was even my hammer.

I guess burgled. I thought they were synonyms.

You can reprogram those with a paperclip. It is not a safe.

Get an alarm system. One of the best deterrents out there. Do not get ADT, they suck balls. And to double up, get a dog. Not a pocket rocket dog, but a real dog like kcrj has listed in the post above. And get a real safe my man. Gunvaults are a joke.

Yeah, the decoy. Today I was thinking of getting a new GunVault, putting an alarm sensor inside it along with a slip of paper that says F--- You. And then they can enjoy the 105 dB ear splitting alarm in that tiny room.

Typical day time residential burglary. The thief(s) took only what could be carried easily in a small bag or backpack. I seriously doubt the thief knew anything about you or any guns. Usually they just door knock homes until they find one where no one is home. Once inside they look through all the usual places where people keep valuables. Your "safe" (really a lock box) is not a safe. It's really designed for quick and easy access, with only limited protection to keep out children, not people with tools.

The thief may live near you, and is probably a young adult or drug user. If the thief(s) was a real accomplished burglar he would have taken much more.

^^^This! OP, I'd be angry if this happened to me, but let's focus on preventing this bs from happening again. My suggestion is to invest in a solid quality safe and a security system. Buy once and cry once, never ever go cheap. Harden your place and make it not worth their while.

His decoy safe was in plain sight in his master bedroom. The thieves broke in through a sliding glass door and stole the entire decoy safe. He purposely did not bolt it down and put a whole bunch of brinks in it for weight and about ten 3/4" pipes about four foot long. It must have felt and sounded like guns when they knocked it over. But they dragged it through the same glass doors into the alley behind his house and loaded it up in a truck and drove away. They were so focused on the decoy, they didn't bother to take anything else. He lost about $200 in all. The price of the cheap decoy.

Anybody store any of their guns at an offsite location? Maybe have a safe in a storage unit or site? Maybe its a good idea to not store all your guns at one place?

What are you guys thoughts on that?

Sorry, this happened. i too was a victim of apartment burglary many years ago by some Punk *** guys that associated with us at the poolside during the Summer. They probably overheard that I was a gun enthusiast,and decided to explore my Dwelling whilst I was at work. I let P.D.know right away,and called from time to time, but my Ruger Security Six 6 in. Stainless and Nice Surplus M1 Carbine were never recovered. I know wer'e in the Christmas Season,But, I hope they ROT IN HELL!!!!!!!!!!!
