This kid never finishes shooting without clearing the firearm, never hands it back with the safety off (when equipped), always keeps it pointed in a safe direction, and never needs the safety rules repeated for him to remember. I can't say the same about all 8 year olds.

I also can't say the same for 95% of adults at shooting ranges.

I took my oldest out when he was 6, but we reviewed basic safety for two years before. He's been out a few times, but I started him out with a Henry .22lr, moved him to a Walther P22, and let him try one of my AR's on a bench. He didn't like the AR after a few rounds because it was too big for him. His younger brother is 5 and isn't ready in my opinion due to maturity. I grew up shooting on my Great Grandpa's ranch and started the same way. I didn't get into larger caliber handguns until I was 12 or 13.

I've been around a lot of kids over the years and the youngest I've seen shoot was 3 years old. However, his Grandpa was retired Air Force pistol team and a range master for two decades. The kid shot a single shot .22lr from a bench at large red balloons.

I wouldn't even attempt to let a 3 year old shoot a Glock .45 ACP.

My father was against pistols for kids and thus I did not shoot one until older. His logic ,with which I agree, was a bolt action .22 rifle which consumed two hands, he felt that a pistol held in the hand was too easy to swing and point, at others, especially prone to by distracted boys.

I learned all my firearms safety and handling with a .22 rifle and a .410 shotgun.

Did not shoot a pistol until age 12 and then only a revolver, did not shoot a semi-auto pistol until High School.

I think semi-pistols and small kids is a bad recipe.

My son is 12, and I just got him his first .22lr for his birthday - a Marlin mod 60. He has shot my other .22lr and .45 ACP since he was 9, but I had my arms around him, hand over hand, explaining the process, recoil, etc. My oldest daughter is 9, and has been shooting .22lr for a couple years now. My youngest daughter is 7 months, and prior to reading this thread, I wouldn't have considered starting her this young, but now I'm reconsidering. Lmao. Only debate is will her first shot be the .45 ACP or the Browning .300 win mag. Any suggestions? Lol

Both of my boys had their first rifles at birth. However they will not shoot until they're at least 5.

They have to be strong enough to rack the slide and actually have a reasonable chance at hitting the target.

Otherwise, start them on a bolt action rimfire.
