My son is 6 and he's been shooting my .22lr rifles (10/22 and Marlin 795) and M&P22 pistol for about a year. Next I plan on having him shoot one of my 9mm's. I have him by my side when I shoot 9,40,45 just to get him use to the sound. As for rifles next I'll have him shoot my heavy tacticool scoped AR15, then it's .243 and .308.

How young is too young?

I believe the internet rule is half your age plus 7.
Seriously though, maturity is more important than age.
One pro tip for taking anyone out to shoot a semi-handgun is to only load one cartridge in the gun at a time.
It would be wise to do this a few times until the shooter is both used to the recoil and can demonstrate ability to handle the recoil. Some people will instinctively squeeze the trigger again to gain control of the gun regardless of where it is pointed.Comment
