Load up all the mags. No need to count rounds.

      See sig.
It doesn't matter how scary, ugly, uncomfortable, or inconvenient self defense can be. Like it or not, you will never, ever be relieved of your duty and responsibility to defend your life, your family, your country and your freedom.

How much ammo do I need? Enough to last me the rest of my life, and then lot more for later.

I typically take 600 rds 45, 150 rds 40, 200 rds 9mm. All are in my locked ammo box. I shoot only what I feel comfortable with. Depends on my mind set, how much time I choose to spend at the range, etc. I reload, so shooting is a lot less expensive that if I had to purchase ammo at todays inflated prices.

I recently started reloading so naturally I've increased how much I actually shoot to support my "brass habit"

Depends on which range I'm going to and which calibers I'm shooting. I'll never shoot more than two different calibers on a range day.
                My current discipline is:
.22LR----only shoot what I can replace.
.38SPL---25 rounds on the old SO qualification course alternating with a "roll my own" combat course.
                .45ACP---35 rounds. Five magazines full.
.44MAG--20 rounds (long range hunting type shots with full power hunting loads)

If I'm training for a competition, it's 30, 60, or 90 rounds (with a whole lot of dry firing) depending on where I am in my training program.

                  Questions for you geoint:

                  1. What are snap caps?
                  2. Failure drills? Is this where you analyze the target after shooting?
                  3. Shot timers? To save ammo?

                  Thanks in advanced.

I've been to indoor ranges perhaps a dozen times in my life. I've been at a shotgun range less than that.

I never remember shooting so much as some of you guys. Do you guys have lives?! (Just kidding.) But really, I remember shooting maybe a couple mags for the hand gun and a maybe at couple targets for the long guns. Perhaps it was because I was using gear and ammo which wasn't my own.

Which brings me to another somewhat subjective question. If I am to enter this hobby, realistically how much ammo am I going to burn up if I am a moderate user ie. a guy who just wants to hone handgun skills and keep those skills maintained at a decent level?

I was planning on shooting 30-50 rounds each go at the range, maybe realistically s handful of times a year. Comments?

Once a week, every Thursday afternoon. 100 rounds of .22LR, and 100 rounds of center fire pistol, either .9MM or .45acp. On rare occassions, 10MM and or .38 special/.357 magnum.

he shoots everything he has and that is it. Me a shoot maybe 20-30 rounds of a couple of rifles and i am done for the day.

Agreed. I will buy maybe 300, shoot 50 and stash the rest.
