I was out camping with the wife, On a dead end road on the Middle fork of Stanislaus . 1am sitting around camp fire a blue Chevy Tahoe drives by real slow couple times freaks us both out. I had pistol on me. Went to truck and put a mag in M1a I had laying on back seat. Truck stops kind of a weird dead silence . One guy in truck says thats not him. Door opens couple guys get out of truck. 2 Sheriffs a Game warden and a guy in plain clothes. Can we talk to you for min. Sure officers no problem. Have a seat. Want something to drink?
They where looking for wanted felon who had been robbing people at gun point and stealing all their belongings. Have you seen this guy? Left a wanted poster and a phone number. And last known truck he had been driving. We sat around b.s.ing for bit. They asked If we wanted a escort out of the area. I said no thanks Ive got people coming in at day light, with the dog nobodys sneaking up on us and we are heavily armed. Just a reminder you never know who or what may happen when your out in middle of no where.

Have you considered having a firearm underneath your seat? locked loaded and ready to rock?

"kept seeing a truck drive by" means he drove by twice before approaching you. Maybe he was looking for someone else. Your move seems way over the top, and could be construed as assault with a deadly weapon - remember, assault only requires them to fear it, and it sounds like you were trying to scare them off.

I'm not saying that there's nobody out to get you, but firing to scare someone off seems excessive to me, and potentially criminal.

Once a suitable spot is secured, the truck is positioned as a barrier. We unload our gear, set up a paper target stand, and a 6" steel swinger. Nothing extravagant, and only one of our group will go downrange to replace targets.

We MOOFB, and are not interested in what anyone else is shooting, and expect that no one is interested in what we are shooting, nor do we expect to be approached, especially with firearms. We do not have tools, ammunition or targets to lend, food or water to part with, no directions to give, nor first aid to render. If approached, pistols and carbines are reloaded, and one of our group will remain in the open to directly address the question, comment or concern while the rest inconspicuously take defensive positions near the truck.

Prior to exiting BLM, vehicle is stopped, pistols and carbines are stowed, and proceed onward quickly.
I'm the exact opposite. If you need aid, I'm more than happy to render it. If in dire need food or drink, I'll gladly share. If you don't have a target, I have plenty. You can be cautious without being an overly paranoid operator on a firing range...

A bit over the top? Are people really that scared?

AndrewAK47,your story begs for a parody thread. I was lost and needed some directions. I passed a group of shooters a few times and wanted to ask a quick question. I drive up and some manic starts shooting by my car! I got the hell out of there!

I went to High School with Roy Alexander, the "other" guy. It happens. I go to BLM alone all the time, never shoot all my ammo though!

Added, Just called the office in charge of BLM locally, formed a contact with a lady. Not open yet. Please be respectful if you call, as quite a few folks are not, Thank you.

? We went out today and it was great!

We were harassed a bit by a striped bottom ape which moved so quick nobody could get a bead on him. The weather was awful. 72 and sunny with a light breeze. Our over watch position was useless, to much napping.

Some guys went tearassing through our down range area. We managed to not empty our ten round mags at them however, whirled peas, you understand.

We took cover at this strangely comforting structure, bit of an odor however.

Lack of TP found many a folk donating a sleeve or two as a sort of ransom to the blue lagoon.

Are those wide open parts really that dangerous? Sounds like the wild west.

Public ranges, here in the bay area, the only one I can think of where I would want to be armed and have body armor is Target Masters. That place is shady even with a police station right next door. I avoid that place at all costs.

The other local places are pretty easy going, Metcalf, Coyote Valley Sporting Clays, and Reeds.

Markleys in Watsonville is another shady one I can think of. Still, not as seedy as Target Masters in Milpitas.
I used to live in san jose and the only gun range i'd go to would be this target masters. I still can not prove a thing, but i sure can lay out the facts. I had bunch of guns, nice collection, but no safe (young and stupid, plus it was not the law back then either). Used to live with my g/f in a nicer area, in an apartment.
One evening we come home, and had dinner etc. and then just out of habit, i went to the closet, remove the dirty laundry to check on my guns (thats where i used to keep em - under the dirty laundry), and they were all gone!
there was gold jewelry and other items of value all over the apartment - nothing else was even touched. there was no forced entry, and no the g/f was not the suspect.
i have a feeling that someone followed me home (of course profiled me first at the range) and waited for the correct timing. Lesson learned - watch your back not only at BLM etc, but also in bigger cities - especially when you leave gun ranges make sure you are not being followed.
                            Merry Christmas to you all.

I'm pretty confident someone was thinking hard about robbing my small group about a month ago in barstow blm.

At about 10 pm a white civic drove by our camp quickly, then came back and slowly drove past our camp as if checking it out, then drove off, came back passing us slowly and did this a total of 3 times. On the last time they came by instead of leaving they took a turn and drove up a hill about 300 yards from our camp perfectly overlooking it and turned off their lights and sat there for about 20 minutes before finally leaving for the night.
