I don't have an answer. Just park some place where you can see anyone that approaches but they can't see you. And avoid any contact with The Man. YMMV.Comment

There are 2 things I have always done, and will continue to do in relation to BLM land:
1) Always shoot with a friend/family member
2) Keep an eye out on the people around you. I do this mainly out of safety concerns. Last time I was on BLM land, the guys above us (everyone was shooting in the same direction, but some areas are higher up than others) were shooting steel plates. Consequently, their ricochets, when present, we're flying in our direction. We asked them to move their plates a bit, which solved the issue. Either way, keep an eye out, you never know whose lurking.Comment

I do use BLM land. I enjoy the 'sense' of freedom, the open space, the lack of people, seeing wildlife and target shooting on my terms (no range rules).
I have gone in groups as large as the mid 20's to solo and everything in between.
I have a deep appreciation for my life and have an instinctual drive to return to my family. I always have a means to defend myself and am aware of my surroundings.
Your write up seems very over zealous and of the weekend worrier variety. Maybe we do the same thing and have a different way of writing it up?
-Inform someone where I am going and what the latest time they should expect to hear from me.
-Find a spot with a good back stop
-check to make sure I wont be taking anyone else's fire and no one will take mine.
-Setup.
-If I am in a group there is a quick safety talk.
-Shoot.
-If I am in a group there is some grilling followed by more shooting.
-Clean up.
-Head home.Signature requiredComment

Deep appreciation for your own life in one sentence, yet find that I'm overzealous in preservation of my own, and those that I shoot with.I have a deep appreciation for my life and have an instinctual drive to return to my family. Yep, that makes perfect sense. By all means, keep the insults coming.Comment

No laws against what you are doing. By all means, don't let anyone here stop you from doing what you do.

As far as dirtbags out shooting on federal land I have this story and i think about it when shooting in remote areas.
Neighbors up in the sierras called the sheriff because someone was shooting to close to occupied cabins. Deputies sneak up with rifles and have shooters lay down weapons and get on the ground while they check them out. Three cons ( prohibited persons) felony warrants on all and all firearms, 10 handguns and 5 rifles were stolen. Deputy said they won't do it any other way , because of all the stolen guns they get this way. Told me to watch out who I was shooting around. Said most were out of the valley or bay area.Last edited by iron cannon; 11-02-2014, 7:42 PM.Comment

I've done a fair amount of shooting out on BLM in Barstow area.
I would never be comfortable with a stranger coming to shoot with me, let alone handling my firearms. Even at official outdoor ranges, I don't mind socializing, if someone wants to handle one unloaded, or in rare circumstances if they seem squared away to take a few shots, I don't mind. However in the litigious state of California, I don't need to take any unnecessary risks.
When I am on BLM land, I always have a holstered pistol. When we pull up to a spot to shoot, if there are other shooters, we give them a friendly wave from a distance and keep on trucking. There is endless places to shoot on BLM land, no need to be stacked up on strangers who I have no reason to trust their morality or ability to safely handle firearms.
I have never had someone actually try to come shoot at our spot, or even approach, but that may have more to do with the fact that when a vehicle approaches, we stop shooting and put our attention on them. Partially out of situational awareness to not get robbed but also to be aware of where they are heading and whether they will be in harms way or putting us in harms way.
Stay safe out there guys. More likely to run into an unsafe bonehead than roving criminal gangs.Comment

Wow, I cannot say that would be my reaction, we get approached all the time out there, never had a bad interaction yet. Rangers generally scope you for about an hour looking for shenanigans but they have an open invitation for dinner as well. I'd be pretty upset if you did that to me and worst case scenario you just told them it's better to nail you from the ridge.I know what this man needs.............bring me the vodkaComment

I guess I won't have any problems encountering dirtbags out there because I plan on going there with other cops and we carry our AR's and pistols fully loaded with extra mags the entire time. That along with body armor and tactical training. 😜
Stay away from us and we'll stay away from you.
Keep your eye peeled for us emser's you can drop your wounded with us lol.I know what this man needs.............bring me the vodkaComment

I've been approached many times on BLM land, never had a reason to do thisOriginally posted by andrewak47True story from my part. I went with my wife and a few siblings and a couple of friends to Panoche Hills. Panoche Hills has ONE main road and many coves you drive off to shoot. A couple of hours passed by and we kept seeing a truck drive by. I told everyone to be on high alert. After 3 passes, that truck turned into our cove. I turned around and shot a full mag of 5.56 warning shots making sure they don't get off their truck. I took no chance of getting robbed. They backed up and took off in a hurry. Mind you, there is absolutely no cell towers there. You would have to get to the main road and then drive about 5 miles to get signal. It takes a lot of balls to play golf the way I do.
Happiness is a warm gun.

We are healthflully paranoid but we certainly have needed to talk to other groups. Usually it's just more people like us forum dwellers and you can trade notes on shooting places or whatever.
"Yeah, like... well, I just want to slap a hippie or two. Maybe even make them get jobs."
