I was at a indoor range in Brea a few years ago, where an off-duty LEO was shooting his suppressed AR with some buddies. He claimed to be a SWAT officer... I didn't think much of it. Just that his buddies were lucky and not really gun guys. He seemed to be teaching them the basics... with his suppressed rifle! Talk about a great newb experience!

Are you saying most officers have a range in their backyard, or are you just talking out your ***?

        There are always exceptions.

Range rules are there to protect the safety of the lowest common denominator. If the range staff has reason to believe a customer can be trusted to break some of the more stringent rules, there's no reason (aside from having to deal with the butthurt from other customers) they shouldn't let him do so.

Shouldn't be exempt but it's up to the range owner. Just because someone's a cop doesn't mean they know how to shoot or will be safer than someone else.

My only concern would be that other less experienced customers may get wild ideas in their head not knowing the exception for LEO or the personal relationship with the range.

When I was a member at a different local range they had no problem letting me shoot as fast as I wanted when the place was empty (usually when I would shoot anyways), but of course had to back it off when others came in.
