If it was such a concern why not ask the range staff? I'm not sure I would assume he was LE just because he had a badge on. Keep in mind quite a few people still think a CCW badge is a good idea.

Special Rules for LEO on the range?
Collapse

Was there a sign that said LEO are exempt? If not, did you ask the owner if the LEO had passed a range course that allowed him to operate outside the rules? Did you just assume the badge was the reason? Are we talking Barnwood?
Hypothetically speaking, I don't care if a private business owner makes different rules for people (whether they be friends, cops, CCW holders, etc...). If the rules are unsafe (friends are idiots), or unjust/unfair (those aren't quite the words I am talking about, but close), then I won't give them my business. Examples would be having ways to qualify to get around those rules but not allowing a specific person because of their skin color, or when the range is busy allowing a friend to push you out of a lane before even the first hour was up.
Are there plenty of shooters that are probably better skilled and trained than many of the police? Sure, but how is the range to know that. If they conducted a class at the range, a person has a CCW, or is an officer, the range can be relatively certain (100% does not exist) that the shooter has enough training not to hurt others or the range.Comment

I did report him to the staff, saw him drawing and firing when I was heading out to buy a new target.
That's when I was told "Ohh he's a LEO, so its ok."Comment

Oh Geez, let me call my insurance agent and ask him if he will make a special exception on my policy for LEO's.

Does your business get insured for letting people come off the street and set off explosives in their hands?
Virtually every business insurance I have ever seen provides breaks or rebates to those businesses that provide better training in those areas people are likely to be hurt. When I worked construction, we were required to train and be certified on the equipment. The company got an additional break on their accident insurance if we did 2 hours a quarter over what was required by the state. My current employer gets a break on health insurance if they can get a certain percentage to go to the health fair each year. Heck, some auto insurance companies will give you a better rate if you take certain driving schools.
Why would it be different here?Comment

At one of the indoor ranges here you can't buy targets like the below if you're not a LEO. Dumb rule, I don't know if they'll let you shoot your own. Figures the place is called "Tacticool Guns and Gear". I don't patronize them anymore.

Why did you even start this thread? They are a private business and are free to make their own rules. You are free to either support them or not. I don't understand why you are questioning their in house rules.

Off-duty LEO at the gun range = civilian at the gun range. Zero special treatment - unless it's closer supervision to make sure they know what the hell they're doing with a gun in the first place. Seen too many who don't have a clue to trust any of them.Tarasdad

I race street bikes. I'm licensed in the "A"class and allowed to pass on the inside of any corner. People outside of my class ('B" and "C" groups) are not allowed to pass on the inside. These are the rules of the track owner and company leasing the track.Knives don't stab people, cars don't drive drunk, eating utensils don't make you fat and pencils don't mis-spell words.Comment

The better question, how many indoor ranges will allow a CCW / CHL holder to draw from concealment....Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED
Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)
Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET
Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT

Because everyone on the range is a safety officer. I've already made my decision if I will continue to patronize the range or not, I'm just curious if anyone else had similar experiences, or if someone has ran a range how they felt about such practices.
But hey, I guess I should have rehashed the same post mass shooting rhetoric since that seems more relevant this week.Comment
