At a public, indoor range, when the officer is off duty, should he or she be exempt from some of the common rules against rapid fire, holster work etc.?

I ran into this recently and the question stuck in my mind of why or why shouldn't a LEO be exempt from these rules.

I know the answer from an insurance standpoint would be that if anyone or anything was hurt/damaged by the LEO it their status as an officer would be irrelevant.

Why shouldn't any joe be exempt? I guarantee that I shoot more than most officers. where is my exemption?

My local indoor range allows LEO's to lower the shooting table and draw from a holster

I have a membership at Sacramento Valley Shooting Center. And I follow the same rules as anyone else.

SVSC has a posted policy that nobody can use the pistol range without first being oriented in a class they offer twice a month and cleared by staff. Not having been there myself, I don't know how strict they are on this. But if that is the case, that's a lot different than an indoor range that just calls the next random name on the sign up sheet when a lane opens.

Public range----NO they should be like any other customer.
They only think they are special and are entitled to special treatment.
There are LE only training ranges we pay for if they want to have special rules for them

Not everywhere has a LEO range. Whether you agree with the policy or not, the existence of LEO ranges in some cities really shouldn't be a considering factor.

At one of the indoor ranges here you can't buy targets like the below if you're not a LEO. Dumb rule, I don't know if they'll let you shoot your own. Figures the place is called "Tacticool Guns and Gear". I don't patronize them anymore.

i stopped shooting those kinds of targets years ago...i have just as much fun with my 8" orange peel targets...tape about 4 of them on my white poster board and im gtg for about 15 minutes

If you have witnessed this, I suspect it has more to do with the LEO's personal relationship with the range owner than with his status as an LEO.

Years ago when I was a regular competitive shooter at Prado, I was permitted, when visiting the range for practice, to do things (like drawing from a holster) that the general public was normally prohibited from doing. It was simply that they knew me and were confident I wasn't going to shoot my foot off or anything.

Which seems reasonable to me.

Do you usually come in uniform or in plainclothes?

I have never been LE and the staff knows that very well.
My range attire consists of shorts, T-Shirt, and flip-flops. If I showed up in Camo or Something more Tacticool, I would probably not get treated so well :-).
