Someone committed suicide with a gun under my name - how do I get it back?

Okay, I just had two detectives come to my house and they explained to me that a shotgun under my name was used by someone to commit suicide. I sold the gun to a local FFL in 2008 (showed them the bill of sale to prove it) but somehow it was still connected to me after six years. How do I go about getting this gun back? And no, this isn't a joke.

If you sold it, why would you get it back?

Request a LEGR from DOJ BOF. If/when you get it take to the PD that has the firearm and request return of the shotgun.

Because it's obviously under my name?

Not sure I would want it, but interested in the end result. Good luck?

How would a long gun sold in 2008 even have your name attached to it?

I thought about that that, too, 10rdmag... but I'd rather get it back than have it get destroyed or back on the street again somehow under my name!

              jeffrice6 - I don't know but it did somehow.

it isn't "in your name", they just did a forward search on the serial number from the manufacturer to whoever they sold it to (distributor/dealer) and so on to each dealer until it got to the dealer you bought it from. that is where the "easy" trail ends. now that you told them you sold it to XYZ FFL, they will go to XYZ and ask what the disposition of the firearm was. XYZ will say that they sold it to Joe Blow and they will then contact Joe Blow (if it isn't Joe Blow that committed suicide with it). Joe Blow will then tell them what he did with it until they finally reach a point where they can't continue tracing it forward.

But, It isn't "in your name" . you sold it and have no financial interest in it anymore.

I don't think the DOJ tracking it to you means you legally own it, certainly not in terms of taking it from some subsequent owner. You said you sold it.

The question is how do you get the doj to acknowledge you DONT own it?

Okay, thanks for clearing it up. Looks like I won't be getting it back... and that's probably a good thing, I suppose...

edit - but wait.. I myself did not buy it.. I inherited it from my grandfather who passed... there was NO papers on the gun under my name until I sold it to the FFL, AFAIK.

then how did they trace it to you? did you sent CADOJ a volreg form when you inherited it?

and it could have been poor choice of wording by the detective but he asked "Why is a gun in your name in (insert city here) if you don't know anyone there?"

Nope, nada. I keep all gun records and the only thing I have pertaining to the shotgun is the bill of sale from the FFL.

that makes zero sense then. but if you ahve a bill of sale showing you sold to an FFL, I'd just walk away from it. it doesn't belong to you, it belongs to whoever currently owns it, if it is the deceased, then it belongs to his estate and they can decide if they want it back or want it disposed of.
