OP states in the first post that "I sold the gun to a local FFL in 2008"

This is NOT a PPT, so no 4473 would have been filled out at this point to link OP to the store or any specific transaction thereafter... However, I believe the FFL does fill out a Pawn / Consignment slip which would definitely link the Make / Model Serial # to OP.

I am not knowledgeable about what is done with these slips, but I had the impression that they were either available for LEO inspection, or submitted to a local LEO department.

Maybe Librarian or some other person who is smarter than me can give you the legal specifics on the pawn / consignment slip and how it is disposed of after a sale to an FFL is completed. This was the first thing that came to mind upon reading your post, hopefully this helps everyone answer some of the questions in this thread.

This blogger claims that the ATF has been building a de-facto gun registry by scanning in 4473 forms during audits of various FFLs.

He wonders how the ATF happened to trace some long guns back to him enough to show up at his house and ask about them...

Just my take on it. Im sure a bunch of us have bought a gun we liked and had to sell cause we wanted something better or had to sell financial or whatever the reason is. Ive only sold 4 guns. One I regret but I needed the extra cash and the other three I just didnt care for them like I thought. Most ppl dont think if they sell their gun somone is gunna buy it and kill themselves with it and its gunna come back on them, so thats not a good reason not to sell your guns.
