I was on my way to the range and I broke down on the side of the freeway. Before I could come to a complete stop a there was already a CHP patrol car behind me. I drive a F-250 so all my firearms were in the back seat in plain view.

I get out of my car, pop the hood and start checking out what could have gone wrong. As the cop walks up I say "Hi, just a heads up, I'm on my way to the range and I have three firearms in my truck" He just responds "OK" and asks me what when wrong, and we start talking about my vehicle.

All in all, everything went better than expected. Update post #33

Broke down on Hwy 101 on the Peninsula coming back from shooting trap at Los Altos Rod and Gun.

We had just popped the rear hatch of his car when a CHP cruiser pulled up behind us. All of our gear was there in plain sight.

He asked if we were ok and we said yes. He then asked us where are the good places to shoot as he had just moved to the bay area.

He then told us to limp the car slowly to a safer place off an exit as the shoulder we were on was very narrow. While we did that he made sure to block traffic for us.

Cool guy and good encounter. They are not all the a-holes a lot of people make them out to be.

Can you have a magazine with rounds in it, outside next to the gun, however both of them are in a locked container. Is that legal?
