Exactly. What the OP experienced was reality, instead of all the FUD that dominates what people read around here.

Maybe in Arizona, Idaho or other free state but not so much in California.

This has turned into a bash cops thread.

My last encounter with a law enforcement officer was about 2 months ago. I took my Jeep and my kid back into a BLM canyon near Landers to plink some .22s. A BLM Ranger was up on a ridge, heard/saw us and came on down.(And yes, he was armed to the hilt.) People are always shooting in this canyon. First thing he said was "this area is closed to any shooting except shotguns". It's a fire hazard thing. I told him we were just plinking with some .22s, and he saw our targets and saw that we weren't trashing the desert. He said "OK, if you're just shooting .22s no problem. Just make sure you don't leave a mess. Here, let me give you a map of open shooting areas". He opened up the hatch of his vehicle and dug up a map that was in with his stun guns, shotgun, etc. He gave me the map and told me to have a nice day.

Can you have a magazine with rounds in it, outside next to the gun, however both of them are in a locked container. Is that legal?

                Yes.

I don't understand transporting or traveling with firearms where the firearms are out in the open for anybody to see. IMO, it is not a good idea regardless of 'just going to the range' or 'LGS' or whatevers. I don't even let anybody know I am transporting firearms when leaving the house. They are always cased when I load them from my house to the truck.

But that is the situation/area I live in. But even if I lived in an upper class area or safer/nicer area I still would not broadcast my intentions to neighbors/people. Even my gun cases do not look like gun cases.

LOL!! That is actually pretty awesome (I use to play the violin). Maybe a guitar case would work too?? I put my rifle case inside a baseball/softball gear bag. As far as my neighbors are concerned I play a lot of baseball/softball!!

You could use anything from a ukulele case for handguns to a double bass case for bazookas.

No need for the lock if your gun is in the trunk. The trunk is a locked container. I carry my gun along with 3 mags in a Maxpedition fanny pack with a lock on it. Perfectly legal and to the letter of the law.

Yes but why? The loaded mag can be stored right next to the gun in the same case as long as the loaded mag hasn't been inserted into the magwell.
