so off duty cops / or people are giving away BBs because they're a new type?

    cool story bro.

I'm just gonna keep an eye on other people's stuff at ASR so I can write a statement for the defense if anyone gets arrested after someone was playing with their stuff.

The OP sounds legit. I go to Angeles often so I don't like the notion of a LEO (if that's what he was?) planting something on someone's rifle. From the sound of Pete's description Pete didn't put the magnet on there, the only one who might have is the guy who pointed it out. I don't think an average shooter out at the range would put anything on someone else's gun, and then point it out to him too?? I've never seen that. It sounds like an attempted frame job to me. Flashing a sheriff's badge w/o being a LEO is impersonating an officer, so not too many people would do that. I think if Pete's answer had been different, like "Oh yeah, that's mine, thank you.", Pete might have taken a ride to the big house. A really odd and potentially very troubling story. I guess a person has to be very careful all the time, like Pete was!

There is ABSOLUTELY NO REASON why an OC Sheriff would be at that range conducting any type of Law Enforcement activities, other than following up on a lead that a wanted suspect out of their jurisdiction was up there shooting. Very fishy.

And by fishy, i'm NOT calling BS on the OP. I'm saying the actions by the guy in question was just way off base, LEO or not. OP, being on here for so long, you've got to realize how many idiots troll this place. You did the right thing by posting this!!!

Only thing that needs to be said is; "WHy in the **** are you touching my gun?"
Never shoot a large caliber man with a small caliber bullet.

Finger prints, dust for finger prints. Report said crime and submit fingerprints.

How would said LEOs prints be on your rifle?

            Just thinking out loud.

Angeles Shooting Range is in LA County. I have no idea what was actually happening, since I wasn't there, but I am possitive it was NOT an Orange County deputy engaged in some enforcement action in another county.

I believe the OP and that the story is legit. It's weird beyond belief and would love to know if there is any video. Or if there was any discussion with the range workers about the guy and if they knew him.

I shoot at ASR on a weekly basis and see O.C. police dept. coast guard and other
city police and swat using the range.

Why didnt you make a bigger deal about it at the time and get his badge number?

I dont mean to be rude but are you over the age of 65? Hows your brain doin lately?

the sting scenario doesn't really seem to make sense here, they have way more subtle ways of going about it. and they CERTAINLY wouldn't flash a badge unless they just obtained the evidence they needed to put you in cuffs.
I am pretty paranoid about the militarization of police, and have been warned here for "cop bashing". Having said that I think this post is the most likely scenario.

I feel for you. Some guys on here can be brutally stupid.

As to your story, totally believable, and yes some LEO feel indifferent to Bullet button magnets and banned "Assault weapons" in general as they realize its all semantics and a bunch of BS. But the wrong LEO could cause you a world of hurt in the same situation.

I've been in both situations and the best thing to do is follow the letter of the law. A BB is a minor inconvenience, a set of handcuffs is a major one.
I love America for the rights and freedoms we used to have.

im kinda mental at public ranges about keeping my stuff in zippered soft cases or locked pelican until ready to shoot and if possible on the bench with with me, not behind me.
