The ASR rifle range has individual concrete shooting benches at the firing line, and larger community benches about 15 feet behind them for storing the rest of your gear. The "yellow line" separates the two. While you cannot touch any weapons on the shooting bench during a cease fire without taking heat, I've often seen people on the back bench handling them without getting an ear full from the RO.

I've never been to a range that permitted handling of any firearm (even firearm cases) during a cease fire.

I believe in GM4spd's story. He is an old timer. I have read plenty of this other posts and he doesn't BS around.

For these reasons I would tend to believe what the OP is telling us. However, I also agree with many others here that more than likely the person who stuck the magnet on his rifle was most likely NOT an actual sheriff. I've heard of people at ASR walking off with other's guns pretending that it was an accident and other shady things. When I'm at ASR, the rifles on the back bench stay in their cases and the rifle on the line is watched.

For edification...at ASR during a ceasefire, you can handle weapons on the back bench but may not touch anything ahead of the yellow line that is behind the shooting benches. You may cross the yellow line to walk to your targets, but may not stand in front of it (unless you are in the dirt area picking up brass). I too have spent the last 20+ years up at ASR. Sad to see what things are coming to.

Many have been able to do just that. DOJ has changed it's policy in the last few years but, many just know that others have done it and think they still can.

Pete is definitely a straight shooter. If he said that's what happened, it happened.

Just curious as to ASR? I'm guessing Angeles shooting range?

Just for my clarification because that's the range I frequent when shooting my rifles.

I always have my Ol lady or me stand and keep and eye on our stuff while at ranges. And keep them zipped up till I'm ready to use them.

I don't like when people go snooping around my stuff.

I shoot at ASR exclusively, and for that reason, I never leave my gear on the table directly behind me. Once I find a spot on the table to unload my gear, I choose a bench a couple of spaces down (on the right) so that I can see it out the corner of my left eye, or can check on it without having to completely turn around.

This. It was not a leo from the OC trying to make a bust in LA County, it was some doofus, maybe a cop, maybe not, that was poorly attempting to show a stranger something new. If the guy was a cop, he probably doesn't even know the device is illegal. I'm guessing it's just a person that doesn't know firearms laws as well as we do and the guy assumes it's legal because he bought the thing at a gun show and it was legal to buy. Thanks for posting, so we can keep our eyes open.

                              to the OP:

Did you consider the possibility the "sheriff" actually did think it fell off your rifle, and he was just an average American, constitution-abiding, pro-gun deputy sheriff? as in, maybe some idiot who used your lane the day before dropped his magnet and lost it, and during the ceasefire the sheriff happened to spot it on the ground and just assumed it was yours?

the sting scenario doesn't really seem to make sense here, they have way more subtle ways of going about it. and they CERTAINLY wouldn't flash a badge unless they just obtained the evidence they needed to put you in cuffs.

That's probably the case. The only thing that sucks is the next poor guy he tries to "help" is not going to know any better and possibly get himself in to alot of trouble.
