I might be in the minority, but I do not think that this is the way to win the "Hearts and Minds" of US citizens. It would have probably been better to simply comply with the police requests, and have the neighbors see them shaking hands as they left. That would give the correct impression that there was no problem with the man's actions. It could have been a teaching moment, instead of a confrontation.

last time I checked, our elected leaders who pass the laws are effectively the winners of a popularity contest and they are SUPPOSED to represent the public opinion of their constituents. While I believe 100% that its our right, it would be much easier to exercise our rights if we had more support of the public opinion. Doing things that accomplish absolutely nothing while annoying people pointlessly are not helpful in the public opinion battle
