Kes, how did this not come up when we chatted at BWO's dinner in NorCal earlier this year!?!?! (At my wedding, there were kilts, and although we didn't read anything in Celtic, my wife did read the New Testament selection in the original Greek).

Back on topic - here's a couple pics from my wedding in 2006; I'm wearing the Mckay tartan (mom's side). You'll note that as I am left-handed I wear my sgian dhu on my left leg. And as I HATE decorative non-functional weapons -- I wore a Cold Steel "culloden"...sharp little @#$ker..

...and here's a couple pics of our piper leading the procession of wedding part + guests from the church to the reception:

So, in the weeks leading up to our wedding, my wife and I both had some strange dreams -- due presumably to the the stress of planning said wedding. The weirdest dream *I* had coincided with a purchase this Beretta Stampede SAA:

...I dreamt that I wore my nickeled Beretta down the aisle in my kilt. Woke up and in the post-dream haze thought that it would be just fine. Told my wife about it and she (this is why I married her..) said "honey...whatever makes you happy...."....

Anyway, I stuck to the traditional armaments.

I am not considering wearing a kilt for attention in the least! If I were, I would have just worn a toga and done the attention-grabbing gig for cheaper!

I see it as a very functional piece of clothing that is pretty freaking cool and would do well in any number of situations (especially here in SoKal) BUT if I get one I want it to be able to compliment the firearm part of my life just as well as my jeans compliment it.

                Hey pullnshoot25,

There are just some things which should not be mentioned on a gun forum (way too much testosterone perhaps), unless you don't mind people taking cheap shots at you.

Personally, I think Utilikilts are really cool, and I have a couple of friends who have worn them for years, and find them very comfortable. Before anyone comments, these are hetrosexual married guys with facial hair, big boots and tattoos. Nothing feminine about them at all.

As for CCW, I would have guessed a regular in-pant holster will work, since presumably you'll be wearing a belt with the utilikilt.

Life can make you do many things, even kiss a man with a runny nose.

Is the knife usually sharp or just for display? Another manly culture that wears "dresses" is the Samoans with the lava lava.

                      Skean Dhu

The "knife" is pronouned skeen-du or black blade in gaelic. Dhu is a reference to hidden. If you can see the skean, then the person wearing it accepts your presense. If not, you might want to leave. "Scot's wae hae wi' wallace bled."

There's a lot of ignorance regarding kilts in this thread.

1.) "REAL" kilts like Kestryll talked about (yards of wool, pleated by hand) are considered by the Scottish government to be "costume" or "historical" kilts. There are even tartans that you can get that are no longer recognized by the Scottish government.

2.) A kilt as recognized by the Scottish government looks more like a dress than the Utilikilts do. They come in tartans only approved by the Scottish government. Trashman is wearing one of these in his wedding photos.

3.) Kilts aren't Scottish! Many cultures over the years have worn kilts and very similar clothing, including the Irish.

4.) Pants, fashion-wise, are actually a relatively "new" thing in the grand scheme of things. Many non-bifurcated garments are still worn by men today in many cultures all over the world; such as Kilts, Sarongs, the Samoan thing (similar to a Sarong), etc.

5.) Chicks absolutely dig men in kilts. Just throwin that out there.

As a Utilikilt owner (who actually IS half scottish), I say GET ONE! They are not Scottish and WHO CARES? They are american made men's kilts and they rock. They are a bit pricy, but they are still made by hand and their quality is absolutely incredible. I have the workmans kilt, and I have worn my 1911 on my side while shooting in the desert with it It's very comfy.

A warning: when walking in public places you will hear people behind you talking, and you will see people staring. Girls will sometimes practically have their tongues hanging out (no joke), so it makes it all ok

You'll also get people asking you the eternal stupid question "duhhh, are you Scottish?". Don't answer, just tell them: "Kilts aren't originally Scottish, they're just popularized by the Scots, I'm American, and this is my American kilt". That answer seems to shut people up pretty quickly.

Bro, get the kilt and wear it proudly. I used to wear mine to all the Scottish Games, Punk shows, (a few Warped Tours), just chillin', or whenever. If I still had it, I'd still be wearing it.... but that's another story...

i find men in kilts to be attractive. perhaps its because they have the courage to stand out from the crowd. perhaps its because most of the time they have long hair and i'm attracted to men with long hair. perhaps its just 'cause they're just good looking. of course, it could just be my scottish ancestry kicking in...... GET THE KILT AND POST PICTURES!

If you want to draw unwanted attention to yourself....

Just walk around Open Carry. That will draw all sorts of attention in most places. Those who think wearing a kilt is for those who want the spotlight to be on them: it might be easier and more shock value to tattoo 'Jenna Jameson' on your bicep or hang three pounds of bright steel off your face.
Utilikilts are just as much kilts as official scottish tartans that seem to be a costume that became all the rage during victorian england and mostly dreamt up by people wanting to sell quality woolen products.
I own a sportkilt(cheapie tartan wrap around) and two utilikilt. My wife wanted to buy me the survival kilt, but They were twice what the standard model is. Utilikilt's definition of 'survival' is twenty beer holding capacity. I was disappointed there was no hidden dirk or claymore pocket.

Lots of fun and air circulation on hot summer days is highly recommended.

As to CCW in a kilt I'm not too certain. Shoved into a pocket would have it swinging around a little too much for my taste. Duct taped to you inner thigh just sounds painful.

                                *sigh*
                                Okay, I'll address this seriously.

If you really want to carry in a kilt there are two ways to do it.
For CCW go traditional and have a sporran made with a back compartment to hold your handgun. When I did Highland Games and Scots/Irish historical recreation we had a guy who was an LEO in the group. The leather worker in the group made him a custom sporran to hold a Chiefs Special hidden in a back compartment.

For OC wear the kilt with a belt and get a paddle holster with an adjustable paddle and slip it in the top of the kilt.
