In the way-back machine, I had just graduated high school and was waiting for my Navy billet to open up, so my dad and I decide to go shooting on a weekday morning. This was back when they still had public shooting up in Angeles NF, so we decided to take a trunk full of guns up the Center Range, up by the Monte Cristo Ranger Station. We get there, there is nobody else there. We get all set up and start shooting, when down the road comes a VW bug. It parks about fifty feet down the line from us. The owner gets out and pulls out a long-barrel S&W .44 Mag revolver. Then he pulls out a piece of cardboard with a target stapled to it. He calls a break, takes his target downrange, and sets it up against a big rock. He gets back to the line and starts shooting, and we can hear the ricochets flying across the range. <BANG> <wheeee> <BANG> <wheeee> <BANG> <wheeee> My dad and I look at each other, and he says, "Let's get the hell out of here before that stupid son-of-a-***** kills one of us." Packed everything up and got out of there.

I've never seen an American flag burned at a gun show. -
The guy who was teaching his girlfriend to shoot and shot himself in the hand a few lanes down from me comes to mind.Too many hobbies, Too little time.
Mind you, I'm 5'7", 180, with a visible Ab...Comment

beat me to itThe craziest story I've heard involving range retards, would be this one time I read about a guy who handed his friend's cousin an AR-15 so he could bumpfire his ammo while wearing a horse mask. I mean, what kind of person lets someone take their guns and just start bumpfiring like that? The opposite would be this time time a guy in a horse mask of all things managed to sucker someone into letting him bumpfire their AR with their own ammo, so the dude in the horse mask didn't even have to pay for it. I've never been able to convince anyone at the range to just let me bumpfire copious amounts of their ammo, let alone do it wearing a horse mask. That guy gets 2 thumbs up.

I know a guy who took a single action .22lr revolver out. He fired a shot and for some reason it was a dud. Well, he took it and cocked the hammer back and put it down next to his leg to look for a target to shoot and had his finger on the trigger. He shot down the right side of his far upper calf, and it came out around his ankle. Just about destroyed his leg, and it was only from a "little .22lr round" that isn't good for anything. Pretty crazy really.Comment

A couple of weeks ago I was at the indoor range (Gun Room) in Elk Grove. Guy in stall next to me was shooting a G27 (rental) and a FN Five-Seven (his gun).
We talk a little and he invites to his stall to show me the Five-Seven (nice gun). He's showing me the FN, I look down to the bench and the G27 was on bench, slide locked open, mag removed, pointing opposite down range ( pointing at me). I would never touch anything on another shooters bench but I did reach down and turned the Glock to point downrange. I didnt say anything. I just thought to myself that someone who owned such a nice gun would know better. Not good table manners.Last edited by 1bulletBarney; 03-03-2014, 11:40 AM.NRA Member

Oh, one other that I forgot. I was at Redwood Gun Club between Eureka and Arcata CA, and 2 range officers were literally about to get into a fist fight over what direction the pistols with their actions open were supposed to face. One guy said they needed to be pointed to the right, (straight to where the shooters at the rifle range are standing) and the other guy said they were supposed to be pointed down range (the correct way IMO) and they were going at it. Both roughly 55-65 years of age, and both being complete and total idiots. I left the range that day.Comment

Another Target Masters Story.
Guy and his gal in lane next to me. She is wearing next to nothing with 6" heels dress 3mm below her huchie and cut down to her navel. Guy loads 1911 racks it and hands it to her. She puts the barrel near her mouth and he starts taking pictures. Like 20 pictures of her with her tongue on it and looking all sexy at him. We packed up and left.
Shooting clays at Coyote Valley 2 weekends ago and 4 guys stuffed into a cart, drive out onto one of the shooting areas to turn around. Nearly got hit then started screaming something about "Watch it".
But the worst was this 50yr old dude with his brand new AR trying to shoot 100yrds with a scope. He must have fired 9 or 10 shots at the target next to him. That guy was me

The local indoor range has seen a flurry of newbie shooters since the beginning of the panic. I mean tons of people.
The good thing about this range is that the range staff is very friendly, which is good for newbies who are usually very intimidated by firearms.
The problem is, the staff is very friendly. They will not enforce the rules in a professional, no nonsense manner. Or at all. Some of the staff like to chat it up a little too much. And when you make friends with your customers, certain boundaries will blur.
In the past few months, I have left early several times because there is always a group of young people who are on an adrenaline high. They will rapid fire. They will scream and jump up and down every time they get a bulls eye. They'll laugh and yell things like "yeah, I killed that foo'!" The guys will try to show off by talking hard in front of their female companions. I even saw a young man and a woman pretending to box right behind their friend who was shooting. It is scary to know that many of these people are actual gun owners.
And the staff will not tell them to stop. If there is rapid fire, they'll tell the offenders to stop over the PA. Just a casual "don't do it again." I hear rapid fire and I get worried that something has happened.
Just not a safe scenario nor is it good for those of us who are working on our skills.
I like the range for its locality and the cheap membership cost. But now I'm debating if I should look elsewhere."...but I am still learning." - Jerry Miculek

Sounds a lot like fieldtime.... but I only go to one indoor range, though that sounds a lot like what I experience there.

No, this would be Insight. I've been to Field Time just a few times but things seemed calm and professional when I was there. If that place is going down hill as well, then I am out of options."...but I am still learning." - Jerry Miculek

In general, young men who bring pretty girls to the range do stupid things. There is just too much testosterone for them to behave like responsible adults with a deadly weapon in their hands.Comment

Good to know. Hopefully I wont end up in a lane next to him the next time I go.
Agreed. Especially when they bring the girls around in attire that is completely inappropriate/unsafe for the range. Remind me of the trophy girlfriends that guys bring to the race track."...but I am still learning." - Jerry Miculek

Any of you guys shoot clays at Tripe B's. Next time you're at the register paying for your rounds, look up at the ceiling. This is what you'll find:

I wasn't there when this happened but can you imagine, you're waiting in line to pay for your rounds and the idiot behind you lets off a round in the air, a good way to to c**p yourself. Guns are no longer allowed in the clubhouse, I wonder why. I hope that guy got a permanent ban.Comment

dumbest thing i ever saw was in a defensive pistol class, and it was by the instructors and deliberate, which made it dumb to the dumbest power dumb.
civilian arms training source is the outfit, and they do demos where the instructors muzzle each other, and the students, and they set up drills where students are muzzling each other, and they tell you it's fine because it's the cold range phase of the class when, you know, an accident simply couldn't happen.Comment
