My wife and I went out to a "designated shooting area" out on BLM land in thousand palms canyon. We were shooting at the source of the green arrow in a shallow ravine shooting in a safe direction. After an hour or so, we start to hear shots directly overhead. We took cover behind my truck and ducked into the truck to honk the horn. We hopped into the truck and bailed out of there at 50mph honking the horn the whole way so whoever was shooting at us would hopefully stop. We realized that the shooters were about 600 yds away at the source of the red arrow. They had set their target at the end of the red arrow, less than 75 yards from us, directly between their firing location and us. They didn't even bother to walk another 20 yards when setting up their target to check what was downrange. They blocked their license plates from our view as we drove by. I yelled at them but I wasn't going to report them to the police for an accident, but it was still a douche move. If you guys are reading this, CHECK DOWNRANGE! You easily could of killed us. The fire was so direct I had to consider whether it was intentional or accidental. For a moment I wondered if I was going to have to fire back in self defense. Fortunately I heard the clang of the target every once in a while so I knew it was accidental. From now on, I shoot on Private property ONLY. These designated shooting areas are an accident waiting to happen. When you pile dozens of shooters into a relatively small area without any order, things get crazy! What is wrong with the hundreds of square miles of BLM land that just sits empty? In AZ they don't have problems like this. If there are shooters near you, drive a couple miles away and set up.

Thankfully, I have never encountered anything very dangerous so far, but I did notice a couple of odd things at Coyote Valley Sporting Clays where I shoot often:

                1. On their trap range, there are these plastic containers for you to throw your spent hulls and boxes into. One of them looked like someone shot it.

                2. Close to their trap range is a patterning board. It looks like someone shot it with a slug, it did not penetrate but there's a big dent on it.

Almost exact same happened to me about a week ago. Also, they had a good laugh at my expense as they fired a very big, very large, VERY loud revolver about a foot in front of the divider next to me. Needless to say I jumped not expecting something so close and in my line of sight. As they giggled, I packed up and left. They hadn't done wrong by the books, and I'm nowhere near a range veteran, but the whole scene gave me the Spidey sense.

Side note, This was after I shot my big guns and had just got to my antique .22 "antique" rifle. So cliche.... and I shot horribly that day too...

Pretty crazy really.

You are quite right to put the phrase "little .22lr round" in quotation marks to indicate facetiousness.

More people are killed by .22LR per year than any other caliber.

Just in case anyone doubts this or is not informed on the topic, witness this:

Sorry about the semi-threadjack here, but I thought this should be brought to the attention of anyone reading this thread who is unfamiliar with the potential of .22LR round.

                          Two reasons.

                          1. If the shooter is not intelligent enough to know that permanent and irreversible hearing damage can occur without hearing protection, then what else do they not know? People who don't use hearing protection are dumb as a board and I don't want them anywhere near me.

                          2. At the very least, shooting without protection produces an immediate reduction in one's ability to hear. That's a safety concern. I don't want some dumb s*** incapable of hearing me or the RSO.

I've been shooting at this spot for a while now. The last time I was there (a few days ago) my family and I were the only ones there and were shooting from where the red arrow starts. It seems to be the best spot because you have the higher ground and can see a large part of the road coming from both directions. Anyways, the first time I went out there it was a Sunday and there were a lot of different groups scattered around. I ended up in the same spot as you and had the same problem. They left really quick as soon as they realized what they were doing. We packed up and left as well. Before reading this, when I go now and it seems I'm alone I always drive down to see if anyone is back there in those other canyons before firing a single round just to be safe. I want to take away the possibility of being "that guy."

And to add my two stories.

First, while in the academy a few years back we were at our first range day for shotguns. We were practicing combat reloads with 870s with one recruit going at a time. We started at 25yds firing 3 rounds of slug and would combat reload and load the magazine while walking up to 15yds. While everyone else was waiting in line to go at the 50yd line one of the female recruits had just finished at 25yds and while walking up, did a combat reload and immediately sent a 1oz. slug straight into the grass about 5ft in front of her. Lets just say that was the last day we saw her. Although it did make for a pretty large hole and a memory every time we walked past it from that day on.

Second, while at the range for the final day and qualification a recruit attempted to holster what he thought was an empty weapon. For reasons unknown, he kept his finger in the trigger guard and while holstering, his finger was pressed down by the side of his holster which sent a round down the side of his thigh and out his knee. (This one I did not witness and was at a different academy and may not even be true.) Either way I thought I'd share for the humor and education.

                                Damn.
Lots more posts than I expected.

Sounds like I'm pretty much shooting by myself from now on. lol

One more from me, at LAX indoor range my friend who is now in LAPD turned around at the firing line to ask me a question while holding a smith and wesson 686 .357 mag. I immediately yelled at him to "point that ****er down range".

Jeez. follow up question to everybody who's posted
How do you decide who you're comfortable shooting with? I don't want to educate new shooters every time somebody wants to shoot with me, but even a lot of guys who own guns do sketchy/unsafe things. Do you go shooting with them once and just see how it goes? I usually ask them how they are with gun safety before we go, kind of informally, it's not like I can safety brief everyone I go with before we get to the range. Plus for all I know they may be better/more experienced shooters than me

Oh yeah one more stupid shooter, while shooting at bee canyon, which has no range officers, just sort of divided canyons (same outing as the horse mask guy) one of my friends saw all of us reloading, decided it was as good as a cease fire, and just told me that he was going to adjust the targets before darting downrange. Nobody else heard him say he was going, I had to call him back.
