First time at Field Time Indoor Range, in Stanton

I didn't see a forum for this range, so here is a short review of my first trip to Field Time in Stanton. I was excited to go to a new range and was impressed when walking inside and seeing everything new

I brought a date with me, it was her first time shooting and she was excited to try it for the first time. I brought a 22 rifle, 1911 .45 and a 12ga semiauto shotgun. When the guy working (nice guy, 30's shaved head) took us in to start the paperwork, he discovered that this was her first time shooting and would not let her shoot the .45 or 12ga that I bought unless I rented a 9mm to let her ramp up to 45, which makes sense on paper and then he flat out said she couldnt "handle" the 12ga. I didn't want to press the issue, but retorted that I've found 9mm harder to control as they have a lot more pop and muzzle rise comparing a 800fps round to 1250fps. And I flat-out did not want to rent anything or spend extra money, I brought 3 guns and ammo to shoot and just wanted a lane.

I didn't want to argue, I said 'your range, your rules', but what really bothered me is that they started to say that she couldn't handle it and she would shoot herself in the face...even a manger came over and said it. I was shocked they would talk like this in front of a new female shooter.

Long story short, we left and went to a different range, The Firing Line in HB and:
    - she shot the 22 rifle and liked it
    - i loaded one round of 12ga and she loved it. So I loaded her up and she shot it and handled it fine
    - i loaded one round of 45 and she loved it, then loaded her up with a full magazine and she shot great.
    - no one was shot in the face!

For her first time out on a hostage target (for fun) with 6 rounds in the mag, she shot the perp twice between the eyes, once in the neck, twice in the gun hand and once in the junk.

Field Time, I understand you have all kinds of folks coming into your range and you cant vet them all, but I was really bothered when you told my date she would shoot herself in the face as a first-time shooter. It scared her and made me feel like I was acting carelessly. Please consider the things you say to new shooters. Perhaps you could have said something like "make sure you only load one round until she is comfortable with it, etc."

I'll be back to your range, but I will not take new shooters and will likely go elsewhere.

Yeah its a great range but they're very pompous. They know they're the sh*t.

They're nice but you have a RO who's running around giving you classes the whole time your there. But once again, it is nice.

I'd recommend going in there with a loaded hand gun. 10+1!!!!

Yea the desk folk are usually the commando type but I noticed if I butter them up they can be kinda cool. But the only range rules I know of were you can shoot 12g against the wall or head shots for obvious reasons. But that forced rental was pretty stupid.

I actually don't mind it there tho. Good clean range R/O's are usually pretty cool guys to me and let me have a little freedom. I even let one shoot a few of my guns since he noticed I was picking up my brass and would help sweep my brass back to my lane in a little pile for me. Figured he was nice enough to do that for me I let him take a pick at my guns I brough and run a mag through.

That was indeed an odd conversation, but the staff there are far more proactive than most places to ensure everyone is having a safe and enjoyable time.

One thing I have noticed is there are a LOT more women at that range than at other ranges in the area. I don't think that's accidental. Female shooters I have spoken to tell me Field Time is an unusually welcoming and comfortable place for them to shoot. I suspect the hand-holding the RSO does at Field Time is more acceptable for a lot of female shooters than it is for more macho male shooters. Personally, I'm cool with it. I'm probably more safety-conscious than most anyway, and you're never too old or experienced to learn something new.

You keep saying something... what do you mean? You want me to walk in there with a loaded gun? I'm sure you are kidding.

Yea I'm glad I went somewhere else, not good when a range tells a new shooter they are going to shoot themselves in the face in the first sentence... and to a girl for that matter who may already be nervous, borderline FUD.

No doubt the range looks great, just hope my feedback goes to the right people there... I've tried to word everything respectfully, because they seem like good guys. YARR

They seem to have more female desk staff as well compared to other ranges i've been.

I really like the range, but they take the job a little too serious. I wonder how much you make working there?
