Won't work... To much liability ( every broken gun will be blamed on you), much work for the $$ you can earn elsewhere, too much exposure to solvents and gun owners are just plain too cheap. The nitpicks will drive you insane. Don't try to make a living in a hobby.

If he does ANY type of gunsmithing like installing a scope technically a FFL is needed.

If you advertise the ATF may say you are a business and come after you.
Should be super easy getting an FFL if the address the work is to be done at is a gun range.

I wanted to start an ammo company but got a lot of comments like these (face to face interactions; not on a forum).... The main things were also insurance and damage claims (including false claims). I thought they were valid points... so I didn't do it.

BTW; I started my first company at 18 and it was successful. I'm not a lazy all talk forum user. When things look like they will work I do them / I don't just talk about doing things.

He would use his home address.

Getting an ffl in CA is anything but easy.

Here's a crazy idea . . . what if you worked with an existing FFL and or gun shops. Maybe a mobile service (Cool logo'd truck) that stops by 10 different shops where customers have dropped off guns to be serviced. Work inside and or in parking lot?

I would be one of those customers that drop off 3 guns for service while shopping and come back the next day to get them. Kind of like a dry cleaners for firearms.

Just tossing it out there. Don't let the "nay sayers" get you down. You don't want to be 50 saying "if only I had done this or tried that"

All you have to loose is your time and some money. What you will learn is how to navigate the system.

            Go for dude!!!!

Even though the lower is considered the gun and it was already manufactured....
That's wrong on the having to put a name on the frame. There are plenty of examples of shops putting together custom firearms and not marking the frame. I have a custom 1911. The frame is a Springfield and the rest of the gun is other custom parts. The shop's logo is on the slide, which could have been absent by request, the only marking on the frame is by Springfield.

You say that like you think 50 is old or something.

                  Hahaha . . . I'm 52

Just hate to see the youngsters not try something hard and or difficult and later in life wish they had tried.

I have a brother who quit his well paying office job to go shoot movies for a living. Everyone told him "you're crazy". He starved for 5 yrs but now is making way more money and he's way more happy doing something he loves.

Nothing worthwhile is ever easy . . . that's what makes achieving it feel so good!
