Lots of replies here about the legality so I'll let you sort that out on your own.
For the average Joe like me. If there was a Service Truck in the parking lot of the range that had good reviews and was reputable, I would totally drop of the guys for a quick clean and lube while I shopped.
Especially at the Sporting Clays where my semi-auto 12 ga gets fairly dirty after 100 rounds or so. You clean I get lunch we are both happy.
How much would I pay . . . that is tougher.
Handgun - $10-12
AR - $15-17
Semi Shotgun - $17-$20
Go for it . . . and come park your truck at Metcalf in Nor Cal and I'll be your first customer.

I agree. If I could shoot my C&Rs and drop them off and then go plink my pistols I'd do it every time.Lots of replies here about the legality so I'll let you sort that out on your own.

The first thing you will need to do is pay a firearms attorney to determine whether or not this is likely to be considered gunsmithing for which you will need a Federal license. As someone said, a call to the local ATF office is a good idea, but whatever they say is not definitive (unless they say you do need a license, in which case, whether or not they are correct (they aren't always) at least you know the local ATF's opinion on things, and that might be important down the road).
In general, it's a bad idea to perform unlicensed activities the ATF might believe requires a license. It's how Sacramento County sheriff's deputies ended up on the wrong side of the law in 2012.
BTW: I'd love to have someone clean my revolvers for me. I hate cleaning revolvers.Originally posted by cockedandglockedGetting called a DOJ shill has become a rite of passage around here. I've certainly been called that more than once - I've even seen Kes get called that. I haven't seen Red-O get called that yet, which is very suspicious to me, and means he's probably a DOJ shill.Comment

i'm not disagreeing with you. my comments are merely based on the fact that the ATF is not always clear and that when push comes to shove how they interpret ones actions will overshadow what even they said at a prior time.
as far as the tailor example goes, material into pants is fabrication, not alteration which is its own entity compared to the 2 classifications of taxable/non-taxable labor.
if the AFT were to tell me that i did not need a FFL for this endeavor, i would not rely solely on the basis a phone conversation - i would obtain an email or snail mail so that i have a documented paper trail and a name attached to it in case the info was false.Comment

i would ask librarian for his $.02 and maybe inquire politely in the FFL forum too.Comment

I know what everyone is saying not trying to lose 2nd amend. rights here. I did call earlier to try to get my local office but as usual no response got the machine but I will try again tomorrow. And if anyone knows a lawyers number that would be able to find this out let me know.Comment

You might take a look at the For sale forums...
Everyone tends to meet in a public place...
Mobile Gun cleaning- I come to your home...... my subconcious says I will get robbed....
the next thing is do I want a panel van parked outside of my home where my nosey neighbors will be wondering what is going on???
Finding a range that does a good volume and does not offer this service would be OK with my mindset. Pay them either rent or a % of revenue.
They could also log in guns to be cleaned during the day while you are at work, after work you show up to clean the guns.
Another question is are you confident in more or less complete disassembly? Removing extractors from 1911, High Powers, CZ52, etc?
So will you be able to offer a complete cleaning or just the routing cleaning?Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED
Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)
Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET
Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT
(thanks to Jeff Cooper)Comment

How much time do you anticipate it will take you to "clean" each different type of firearm?
I know to do a good job cleaning one of my Ak rifles which I regularly shoot corrosive ammo in takes at least an hour...
So will it be a charge based on time or a flat rate per firearm?
If you do spend an hour cleaning one gun, that means you can only reliably clean around 8 or so rifles each day.... I really don't think anyone will want to wait for one hour, much less hours at the range while you clean their firearms.
Additionally since you will be in business I believe you will need a FFL, as customers will be leaving their firearms with you just like a gunsmith...Poke'm with a stick!

Not to sound like a smart a** I mean there is a million ways to skin a cat to tell you how I would run my business is like asking a magician how he does a trick (rude and noyb)
oh I also own a couple ak's and a complete strip clean and lube 27 min by hand with my ultrasonic 15 minComment

Hey you came here asking for input... So don't have such a thin skin. That is rude....
There may be a million ways to skin cats. But that's not what you are contemplating...Your potential business is simply cleaning guns..
Not much mystery there, and not many secrets to hide...
If you can't do it quickly and at an affordable price no one will use the service.
Additionally what kind of insurance will you have against damages... Because you will have folks who claim you damaged their guns, guaranteed ...
Good luck....Poke'm with a stick!
