As far as bullets being shot into the air and their lethality I can still remember ripping my big toe open on a .30 cal round that had buried itself halfway into my old school real wood floor years ago. Let me see, that is through asphalt shingles, the 1/2" wood sheathing, anyother joists in the ceiling, the sheetrock, and then burying itself at an approximate 45+ degree angle into carpet covered wood floors.
Yep, I'm saying that if me or one of mine had've been walking through that doorway at the wrong time that person would not be here today.

I remember seeing an episode of Cops of the same thing. the guy was told not to do it again, this show was back in the 90s though and i think it was the day the gulf war was claimed it had just ended.

What goes up must come down though, what if the shot fell into your house?... or hit someone?

Shot definitely wont have enough velocity to hurt anyone or anything badly coming back down, except steel shot.

99Medic, everyone will approach every situation different. If this would have been my neighbor, I would have approached and educated him/her instead of calling the cops. But if you feel that you did the right thing, more power to you.

theres a good chance that he admitted it. the guy was the stupid type.

Wait - how could they prove that? Were they witness to it? Or was he in custody because he has a warrant on his arrest or he was doing something else when they arrived - or he gave them a hard time, or had shotgun in hand? By the time they got there, I would bet he was back in the house and nursing a beer or scarfing down a porterhouse off the grill. Or was he outside when they arrived with shotgun in hand AND they saw/heard him do it. If not, then yes, you would be involved.

Something is not all adding up - I can't imagine he would be in police custody just on your call alone, unless he fired in the air and they were witness to it, or you stand as a witness.

I've been sprayed with birdshot while dove hunting. It's not a big deal. And even Mythbusters tested shooting rifles into the sky without lethal consequences. Only time you'll get a dangerous situation is if firing at a low angle. Shots that are ~ straight up aren't really dangerous.

That said, I don't advocate people doing it, nor would I do it. But it's not the surefire killing method the media portrays it as.

Ditto to that, I doubt even buck shot would have a high enough terminal velocity to seriously injure someone let along bird shot.
