Since I'm a sissy like the OP, I just went ahead and had mine engraved before it was CeraKoted. Problem solved, and the Serial is inline with my AK that I built from a flat. Because I built it as a SSE AR pistol I even voluntarily registered it, or at least tried to I sent in the paperwork a few months ago. I'll probably call them in a week or two just to check in.

My range has never inspected any firearm I have brought there to shoot. Range officer and I had a great discussion regarding my 80% build. Can't say enough good about MSM

Not that i like the place but, I dont recall Lyttle Creek ever inspecting any of my or my bro's rifle's on the trips we make there. But personally we do prefer BLM land as well. We have limited our trips to this range for a quick rifle/scope zero since it is up the road from us.

I live in the LA area, so shooting on public land is not really a viable option.
It is not illegal to have a firearm that has no serial number on it. As long as it is yours and you made it then you are gtg. Provided that it ALSO follows the PC in regards to weapons and features.

@LC925: Lytle Creek are known "AR Pistol" Nazis. They will just straight out tell you to GTFO with your SBR if you bring an AR pistol there. If you have your 80% in a rifle config and only use 10 round sized magazines (no 10/30 or 10/20 length) you'll be fine.

along with too many stupid's shooting guns. I just can't bring myself to shoot at a local range in So Cal when I can drive to BLM land. Burro Canyon and Lytle creek are 60 miles (60-45 minutes) closer for me but its well worth the drive to BLM land.
It takes a lot of balls to play golf the way I do.

Guess I can't take my Marlin 22 I bought in 1967 - It doesn't have a serial number and I threw away the Zody's receipt long ago. Maybe I make my 80%er featureless and take some of my old 30 round mags.
