Your appearance is all a person has to go off of in first impressions. It tells them who you are. You dress nicer for job interviews right?

To dress "thuggish" and then be upset that someone thought you were a thug is bassically saying "I'm a thug, I do thug stuff" then get upset that they heard you and now dosent like you. Your telling people about yourself with your clothes.
Perhaps you missed the part where I said I wasnt dressed thuggish.. I was dressed quite comforable and casual. You could say I looked like I just finished playing a basketball game or something.

Tattoos invite judgment. That's the point of getting them. To dedicate your arm (via "ink") to being from your hood, and your other arm to your heritage (tribe) invites judgment.

I suspect that you would agree that a young girl who is wearing a tube top with a short leather mini skirt and lamenting her bad reputation has a credibility problem.

A minority guy in his 20s who wears sweats and has lots of tattoos who is from L.A. understands the message he is sending out with his choices. The problem isn't that you are misunderstood. The problem is that you don't like being judged for your choices, even though you have invited judgment.

It is not my intent to insult the OP or anyone else here. If you think I'm wrong, that's okay with me and I don't think you're a bad person. Own your choices and make a conscious effort to be self-aware. You will be a happier and better person.

If you want to be taken seriously by the suits, avoid tattoos.

Fact of life, you will be judged by your outward appearance especially when people do not know you.

Maybe wear a hoodie/long sleeve and regular pants next time?

If people have prejudices it's understandable. Doesn't make it okay, and him being a d**k isn't cool either.

I work in a professional environment and have and have tattoos; I have some that would be visible if I wear a short sleeve shirt. Even though I work in a creative atmosphere and the workforce associated with it, every time I have to attend a meeting outside of my department I always wear long sleeves. The younger, creative types don't care but the older, executive types always stare if they are visible. The taboo is slowly going away but it hasn't disappeared yet.

And are you aware that at many (most around here) schools do not allow kids to wear sports jerseys or clothing sporting team names, because they are associated with gangs? Seriously, every additional detail you gives screams even more loudly, gang member. Why not post a pic for us?

PS: I'm not trying to be an *** OP. I'm really trying to understand, and to help you understand.

Im just proud of being from LA, california.
You are indeed quite naive. Those are ALL gang or prison type tattoos. Post a pic of yourself already and we can finally end this silly debate. Oh, and LA sucks.
