So today at Dicks Sporting Goods

I went with my mom, dad, and brother to look for a shotgun for my mom. So they're at the gun counter and I'm looking for a service rep. I see some guy helping out some other folks in the archery room after he's done he comes out. I flagged him down and asked if he worked there, he's wearing some rocknroll style shirt with "I'm redneck" on it shirt. I think to myself alright right on he must like guns and Pro2A if he's a self proclaimed redneck. So we get to the counter and he ask who's buying the gun and I tell him my mom is. He then turns to my mom and asks her for her ID she hands it over, then asks for mine and I hand it over with the remark "What you think this is a straw purchase or something". This has been the first time I've been asked for ID, and I've been to every single local gun shop, big5, and sports authority in town. Must be new policy.

So my dad and me point out which shotgun to take out of the counter compare weights and hand it off to my mom and ask what she thinks. While this is going on the guy keeps talking to his hands free set and repeated keeps asking someone needs to come over and he needs to go somewhere. So we hand over the shotgun, he didn't ask if we wanted to look at more shotguns, takes off. I'm looking around to see where he just had to go. Apparently to help another customer instead of the one in front of him. I'm thinking to myself wtf, really, and I'm dogging and eyeballing him. He sees me doing it too.

So there's 2nd rep at the counter helping out another customer. After they get done, I flag the 2nd guy down. He actually looks like he works there, he helps us. And I take off to look at the bows. I come back and there's a third guy, the supervisor looking type comes over and asks who's buying the gun, I tell him my mom is. Then supervisor looking guy asks me if I'm buying it, I tell him no I'm not the one buying it. Then he tells me well since I'm not buying it, and because I was the one asking all the questions and answering back he can't sell the shotgun to my mom. I tell him "What kind of f#$ked up policy is that".

The first guy comes back and says since I was answering all his questions in stead of letting my mom answer them. He couldn't sell it to my mom. I tell them I was doing that because I was translating for my mom. He then says I should had asked him if I could be the translator first before doing that. Because you know I needed his permission right? He goes on and says well I said something about a straw purchase earlier and obviously I knew what a straw purchase is, so he was not gonna make the sale. I'm thinking to myself really ****ing ***hole, I have a FFL03, I have armory at home, a straw purchase is really on my high list of stuff to do. I'm going to call corporate tomorrow and see what their policies are. I'll post their response here.

Clovis. The one in Fresno I've never been asked for ID and had any problems.

You were in a place named Dicks. What did you expect?
"Did I say "republic?" By God, yes, I said "republic!" Long live the glorious republic of the United States of America. Damn democracy. It is a fraudulent term used, often by ignorant persons but no less often by intellectual fakers, to describe an infamous mixture of socialism, miscegenation, graft, confiscation of property and denial of personal rights to individuals whose virtuous principles make them offensive." - Westbrook Pegler

If you are an FFL. Why in the world would you take your mom to dicks to buy a shotgun?

I can't finish reading your post... There are no breaks or spaces.

But that said, I've been to Dick's countless times since they opened a store near where I live and I've been asked for an ID when I've asked to physically handle a firearm, and anytime I've been at the counter when someone else has asked.

I'm trying to think if the policy was in place before the panic and the CT shooting because I know Dick's has made some changes since then, but I can't remember that far back. I don't support their choices (to change policy & inventory).

I don't know why they ask. I'm guessing it's meant to keep you from stealing the gun (as if you're going to walk out with it), because it's not a good way to ensure the person asking can legally even handle a firearm, let alone own a firearm...

Regardless, it's really not an issue for me. I have nothing to hide, besides they only "hold the ID", they don't record it or make copies, at least that I've personally seen or been subject to.

It is likely to prevent someone from running out of the store with it. You'd be surprised at some of the things these large chains experience given some of the locations they end up in.

I had something like this happen at Big5 in Sonora about a week ago.

My wife wanted a 22 rifle( likes to shoot but doesn't know alot about firearms) so I went with her to give advise.

We walked in and I asked the manager if he had any 10/22's , he said he did, and I told him we were looking for a 22 for my wife.

He hands me the rifle and I handed it to my wife and my wife asked me what I thought, and was it OK. I said it would be nice to have a stainless model , but this would be fine.

My wife says we will take it and the manager says " I cant sell you the rifle because this looks like a straw purchase to me."

I tell him I have a 10/22 and that this is for my wife , her gun to shoot and take care. We argue back and worth for a minutes and he tells " well if its really for your wife , then you buy it and transfer it to her down the road sometime." I said WTF , that IS a straw purchase.

By this time my wife is wondering what is going on and is very embarrassed. We leave with no rifle.

The new BS we have today, you can't even help your spouse or friend buy the right gun or it's a straw sale. What a crock.
