I shouldn't have said he was a moron. I was probably upset that somebody I don't know called me a racist since the 2nd amendment was "rooted in slave owners protecting their right to own slaves".

Wow. that person is actually completely reversed in their information. Gun control is rooted in preventing freed slaves from having guns to protect themselves.

Either way, don't let emotion get the better of you and you'll win. But you won't change antis minds. Work instead on refuting the anti arguments so the witnessing fence-sitters can make informed decisions instead of emotionally charged MSM regurgitations.

Not at all. One of my coworkers likes to show us Facebook exchanges where he has 'won' an argument with some random internet person. It is excruciating to sit there politely and feign interest.

While I don't do FB, I have no "real" friends that are anti's. An anti will barely make it to the level acquaintance in my world. Now I do have friends that are ambivalent about guns with no strong opinion either way. Those I take out to the range for conversion therapy. Has worked VERY well so far, especially on their kids.

My short answer is: it depends on the post and who wrote it.

My longer answer is:

You may "win" a forum / FB / BBS argument with effective and well thought out writing, but your chances of actually changing an anti's mind on the subject is near zero. The ONLY reason I will ever engage a libtard on FB regarding 2A issues is if there is a blatant misrepresentation of the facts or outright lies and I only do it for the benefit of others who may read it.

A wholesale change in one's thinking on this and other deep-seated beliefs requires an emotional disconnect from one's old way of thinking. Logic will rarely, if ever, lead someone to an emotional decision because many of beliefs have been ingrained since childhood. To change those views would mean "mom and dad" were completely wrong and admitting that their views have been skewed for however many years... something that monumental requires a BIG event in someone's life for that kind of change to take place and an Internet discussion just isn't going to lead someone there no matter how persuasive.

Have as many facts and as much unbiased info with sources as possible. If someone posts MotherJones or Huff Post articles about gun control, I'll usually spend =< 5 minutes posting links to other, more sanely written, articles presenting the more conservative viewpoint and provide my own views on the subject. If the poster goes way off topic though, I'll make one attempt to steer it back. If the discussion is all over the place, I usually don't bother.

As far as being duty-bound? No. Save your best efforts for FTF discussions with fence sitters.
