As far as the entry procedure, don't sweat the small stuff

They make you take your hat and glasses off to go into SESLOC for crying out loud.

I've been ignored at Four Seasons before, along with Home Depot, Best Buy, and the Post Office

I still go in there if I want something they have

And if it bothered me enough, I'd speak up there, not here

As far as I'm concerned, sometimes it's just as aggravating to be asked over and over again, "can I help you?" when I'm just looking
Talking to the owners would help if it was a single employee that had been rude and I have done so myself at several stores.

However when the WHOLE store displays that attitude then it is a safe bet the owner could care less (or is encouraging it) so why bother.

I too find it annoying to be asked over and over if I need help when I am just browsing but once I do get that I-am-obviously-looking-for-help expression on my face I would expect a good salesman to notice.

        Pretty common

I waited at the counter for almost 5 minutes obviously looking interested in looking at some guns. At least three employees not dealing with anyone didn't offer any help, I had to ask. Worst first impression of a shop I've ever had! Even my wife said if she had been new to guns and checking it out for the first time she would have been completely turned off from it and walked away for ever. In this day and political environment this is not the rude impression we need to make on possible new commers much less gun lovers like me and my wife! Definetely do not recommend this shop!
This seems to be a pretty common theme in gun shops. It's no wonder many people are turned off to firearms. I'm glad some of these shops are named so we can boycott them.

The place has horrible customer service. 3-4 years ago I was told by employees that the owner would not allow me to have a CA legal AR sent to the shop "cause it's not really legal" and on another occasion I had another employee insist I buy a handgun safety cert to pick up my hunting rifle that I had shipped to the shop. I cut my losses and stopped going there a long time ago.

Sounds like they practice the A**Clown school of business in that shop.

Personally I wouldn't even shop in that store since they obviously feel (who better to know) they are in such a dangerous part of town that they require such stringent security measures for their employees safety. Given that need for security, a customer has an obvious chance of getting robbed as they exit the shop.
No idea if it was there when the OP went in (or if he was wearing any of those things). I haven't been there in over a year.

As for the neighborhood, it didn't seem bad at all (but I don't live in SLO). At the time it seemed they catered to LEO with the range there. It's possible the city required extra security of the cage to have a range in town (though it's not exactly in the middle of downtown), but I don't know if that's the case or not. I've been to a few shops that require being buzzed in. I didn't find it that strange.

Sorry for not being clear, I was throwing the question out to the thread in general and not asking you about something you would obviously have no way of knowing.

My quick review of SLO area shops:

                Up the grade
Atascadero Firearms - good experience, good owner, more geared towards modern, new mfg stuff
Ucle Ed's Outfitters - bad prices, they wanted ridiculous $ for a SMLE No.4 with no rear ladder sight, and an 03a3 with a hex nut for peep ...

                In town
Four Seasons - good guys, they are the best stocked of all the shops around

                AG/Pismo
Outdoorsman at Arroyo Grande - good owner and gunsmith, more geared towards hunting
Jim's Ammo Depot - Not many firearms in stock but good owner

                Morro Bay
Harbor Gun Shop - Fantastic owner. If you love C&R, you must visit. Last time I was there, he had a pristine Krag rifle (!) with bayo.

It's truly a shame that some gun stores have no/very little customer service Oh well, take your hard earned money elsewhere

just to clarify, neither I nor my wife had a hat or sunglasses on, I wasn't about to take it up with the owner/manager at the time as it was the entire staff and would of gone no where at the time, I posted here to give other cal gunners the benefit of my negative experience just as I have done in this forum with positive experiences with other gun stores(alquest) in separate threads. since it was the entire shops attitude I don't see it as a isolated instance. to the CG'rs that know the current owner I would hope that you could bring this up to him in a polite way and explain to him that his shop is putting out this kind of vibe and maybe all those that live in the area and need to utilize his shop could benefit from this input in the future in form of a more service aware staff. For me, I will not go back in.

I am sure the owner is well aware people disregard his sign stating EVERYONE must stop and wait to be buzzed in. He is also well aware it creates a bad feeling both with the customer who has to wait and with his employees when people ignore this safety rule.

I have no idea why this shop is doing this, who knows maybe there are death threats against employees and they want to control who comes into the shop.

The problem here isnt just with that shop. You shouldn't have walked in until asked to and the exiting customer is at fault too.

I've had good business from Rangemasters quite a few times. Mostly from Tex, Anthony, and the guy with the beard(forgot his name.)
I've been ignored and I've been shunned. Today when I asked about price of ammunition, I got a "yes or no?" Then the person just walked off.

I drove down the street to Four Seasons and the guy(forgot his name too) acknowledged me immediately even though he was helping out another customer. He was the only one behind the counter, but was very helpful. I asked him quite a few questions, but never felt like he was rushed answering them.

NONE of which excuses the behavior of the store employees and to blame that behavior on the customers is LUDICROUS.

Apparently they are more concerned with control then they are with actually making a sale and increasing their customer base.

yes because making a buck is more important then employee safety...
